This is getting better by the minute...

Mandriva and SuSE are demonstrating that Vista is nothing to brag about when compared to what is capable on a Linux PC with AIGLX and XGL, combined with today's modern KDE and Gnome window manager.

Now, Microshaft is announcing bone-head moves, like this to "combat software piracy".

I say, this is good news for Linux and I'm really looking forward to Vista's release. Why? Because people are going to finally see just what a piece of sh*t it really is.

This sort of news just makes Linux that much more inviting to the desktop computer user, in my opinion. I predict the Linux desktop PC is going to be sitting very pretty this time next year.

Microsoft has always been pushing sh*t onto consumers. As long as all of these new machines come with Vista pre-installed, people will eat it up no matter what, even if Vista becomes another stinker. I don't really see Vista making much of an impact on Linux at all. Did XP make much impact on Linux? Not really. Linux will just continue to chomp away on the desktop like it always has.

I think what we have to be concerned about, is if Vista is a secure and reliable product or not. If Microsoft can get the security and stability issues resolved for Vista, then we have a serious problem. If people can get the hardware support, games, applications, and an added level of security and stability, why would they ever look at Linux on the desktop?

DRM

I think people will get sick of just spewing the money to get to THEIR information. DRM is not being implemented correctly. It is being used to keep people paying for the same thing over and over.

I think microsoft will lock one too many people out of their own pc's with vista and the sheeple will eventually just get sick of dealing with it.

I personally could care less if Joe user uses windows - I just want to be able to run linux whenever I want to. I really belieive in my gut feeling we will see microsoft post vista release try to get some computer legislation past that would basically outlaw installing linux on any new pc.

I am sure they helped with glad hands the passing of the DMCA and would probably love to take that even further.

I think they just want to sell xboxes and have people use them as their pc's and make it illegal to mod them or do anything else to THEIR pcs.

I think what it comes down to is people will compare Vista to Windows XP, not Mandriva or any other Linux distro. You're right that Vista has a pretty low standard it needs to meet.

Not that the top 5 Linux distros aren't a better desktop experience for most people. It's just that technical superiority has never meant guaranteed popularity.

If it did, we'd probably all be running OS/2 on PowerPC based Amigas.

I think Windows users will stick with Windows because they 1) would pick OS X over Linux any day of the week if given a choice, 2) have never heard of linux, 3) and those that have have been called "sheeple" by linux geeks. I also think this will result in better cheaper hardware for all of us.
