Theora looks like it is going to be a really cool codec! It's billed as doing for video what vorbis is doing for audio!
The Theora codec is encapsulated in an ogg file by default, but can be streamed as rtp. The library, while in alpha, is pretty stable. I'm currently converting a Narutu avi to theora with ffmpeg2theora and the quality is looking pretty good!
I used helix for playback. My mplayer I don't think has theora support yet as there was no video, but audio.
Definetly check this out!
