I installed Edgy on my lappy last night, mostly to see if it would deal with my display correctly. Props to it, it did - all glorious 1400 x 1050 on a 14.1" screen - DAMN that's small. As per usual, the level of polish is very high for most things - I especially like the new power management tool, and they've really made what I think is a good choice as far as their base selection of apps go, and as ever, their repos are vast. Basically *everything* I've tried on my lappy already work, though I much prefer tpbd to kmilo, they made a very good effort there. fn+f12 is still broken, but using the power management tool, suspend and hibernate are available right off the bat. However, they still chose to use the kernel builtin, which seems to be getting slower with every single release, rather than suspend2.

However, as per usual I can't stand the fact they choose to use "simple browser" for *fscking everything* - WTF is up with that? Does anyone know how to get my regular list of konq profiles back? Also, I think I'll always hate their System Settings app, but I have to say it's a lot better in Edgy than it has ever been before. I can't really put my finger on it, but so often I feel like Kubuntu is working against me. Now I understand that part of this is that I like to do things my way, and kubuntu is very much designed to do things "The Kubuntu Way" - but that's not all of it. It's also the "customizations" I've already mentioned which frost me - I want my stuff vanilla a lot of the time - or if it's not, it shouldn't be a chore to return it to vanilla.

All in all, very nice looking distro with the usual kubuntu flair and the usual quirks (quArks in Dann-speak) as well. I might actually keep it on my lappy if I can figure out how to get my regular Konq profiles back - at least for a while.

One thing to note...ship-it is still shipping dapper drake cd's.

To answer my own question:
This will re-enable the "web browsing" and "File Management" profiles for the user you do this as. If you want to change things globally, do the same thing, but make the changes in the /usr/share/apps/konqueror directory. I'm planning on just copying the entire shitaree over from my arch box later even though these are really, generally, the only two profiles I use regularly.

IIRC it's a young newt. These names are getting wors, but they HAVE to be fricking used because their versioning system sucks utter sh!t. There are *still* people out there that think 6.10 is the 10th point release of their 6th version, and understandably.

You should download and install 6.10 Server and then apt-get kde-base or kde-core. That's what I plan on doing.

Zod is an awesome name for a Linux distro.



SUSE at least stick to a tradition and give each release a codename that are related to a lizard (Coincidence?). For example, 10.1 was called Agama Lizard and 10.2 is called Basilisk Lizard. I like that kind of naming, because it makes a lot of sense when you look at SUSE's logo.

Nothing, but no one has any idea wtf a drake or an eft are. I'm looking forward to Voodoo myself. Noodle was the bomb - I'm not so into Gimick though.

Yeah, but at that point there's not a whole lot of point in running Kubuntu in the first place.

Another thing they've done this time that's really impressed me as far as end-user-friendly goes is that it offers to install many non-free things if you need them but don't have them. Both mp3 support and flash have done this for me so far, though the mp3 support thing was a little strange since I was uing the xine engine, and I had the codecs all installed. It still insisted that I didn't have mp3 support, so I imagine the script that is doing the checking is only looking for mad, not actually checking with reality. Personally, I found that irksome. For my wife, however, I imagine this level of hand holding will be very welcome. I'm probably upgrading her lappy this weekend. She takes scores of pictures of our kids, and she was really in to the new digikam integration. I have to admit it's very nice.

Since Dapper, they have gone into an alphabetical mode, with Feisty Fawn next. I suppose they'll have to keep looking for ridiculous animal names.
