Ati card drivers "ati" versus "radeon" -

I'm trying to figure out what the difference between the two drivers is, and because a google search of radeon or ati and linux is practically useless (99.99999% fglrx or compiz stuff returned), I'm having a hard time finding much info. Both seem to work perfectly well with my x300 card in my lappy as far as 3d accel goes. Anyone have the dope?
