Wow. That's huge news. If Red Hat was smart, they'd snap him up in a minute.

I'm thinking he'll land at Ubuntu since Mark sent that nice letter to the Suse developers making them aware of his little distro:)

Nat? Nope, if you go listen to the interview with him on LugRadio, he's quite positive about "the deal", and I have not heard Miguel argue against it either.

Jeremy has agreed to come on the show on January 10th. Should be an interesting conversation.

That should be good - I really enjoyed the first interview you guys did with him.

Yo Pat, since Jeremy is a part of the GPLv3 process, definitely bring that topic up. He helped draft the initial "anti-DRM"-section of GPLv3.

Wow, some of the comments are just off the map. Some of the people accuse Jeremy of simply leaving because he learned every thing he wanted to learn from Novell in the last year. Another comment assumes that Jeremy left not because of his principles, but because of his new job with Google. The comment is made that it is easy to leave when you have some place new to go.

It really bothers me when people assume the worst about people. Jeremy does not have a history of lying or failing to stand up for what he believes which is shown by his involvement in GPL3. Also if any of us had half of the talent Jeremy has we would have headhunters knocking on our door. Talents like Jeremy would be high demand. One of the lead developers on Samba which allows every Windows desktop on the planet talk with Linux servers. He actually has a mind that can wrap itself around a MS file transfer standard which sounds super human just by itself. He is a wiz at file systems and understanding them, which is not an easy area of software to have your focus. I'm reminded of a relative who is a talented Engineer, as soon as one company heard he was thinking of taking a job at another company, they immediately contacted him with an offer that was way more than he was getting at the company he was leaving and the company where he was going. They offered him other perks which he wanted specifically. He has talents and companies who know about him, what him on his side. I'm sure that if Jeremy even hinted of leaving Novell he would have his phone ringing off the hook with offers. His talents are in high demand in a world where Linux is taking over the server room, and Windows desktops still dominate in the work place.

Jeremy even said in his interview on TLLTS that people who learn Samba are in high demand because very few people actually understand the file transfer standard, and with MS always trying to change it to break Samba that would make you in even higher demand. Jeremy basically said that you could secure a lifelong career by getting into the main development of Samba.

I look forward to Jeremy being one in January because he was a great interview, in fact one of my favorites.

There are all sorts of reasons why people write comments, i hope this question gets asked in the show, of course he may not answer it correctly.
Joining google, although there arch enemies of MS, they have a fair amount of closed source projects going on. They have opened up a large amount to be fair, but i would not in any way call google the idea ethical "do no evil" company.

I think the major difference is that, in they eyes of many people, novell really kicked the linux community in the balls with this move. There's "not being 100% ethical" and then there's selling your soul to satan. I'm not sure where I stand on the issue, but I agree that novell is going to be very unpopular with some forlks for a long time - if not forever - because of this debacle.

It will properly depend on if novell drop the deal in a few years like sun did.
Lets not forget novell are a big buisness and i am sure if google had an advantage to team up with Ms over something, they would, its just not happened.
