Way too steep for me, but it can easily replace your phone, music device, and pda in one package. I'm impressed. But doubt it will run linux.

It looks nice, i would cost me a fortune as i don't have a contract phone, i am on something that we call in england "pay as you go" , which means you goto a shop and pay for credit to be added to the phone when you want.

I will have to say I have been using a RAZR since switching to Cingular. I was mulling getting a Treo 650/680, but now I have made up my mind. I will be getting one of these.

I should go back to a non-contract phone, I spent a lot less, though it's nice having nation-wide calling on my current plan with my wife, particularly when we go on trips. But my cell phone bill is the biggest bill sometimes, only surpassed by my electricity bill most months.

I would like to have that iPhone, but there's no way it will work with Linux for quite a while. If it ever does, though, and gets down to the $300 range, I'll snatch one up. To have a portable music player, phone, and PDA wrapped into one device without a clunky interface would be worth it. Surely someone will be able to reverse engineer the interface for it.

Well if it wasnt for the data plan, I could have this be one of the cheaper bills. But, I need tetherability ....

To be honest I don't really like it. Maybe it's only me but I don't think a touch screen is a good idea for a cell phone, I like the tactile feel of actual buttons. Also with such a big screen and everything you loose a lot of battery life just because of those little extras, I want my phone to have as much battery as possible incase I get lost, my car breaks down, or something else unexpected happens. I don't like the idea of my digital audio player and phone being the same device.

Also am I the only person who doesn't like the interface? I would imagine at least the album cover select to be hard to use.

I don't think this is all that inovative but since it has that huge Apple logo I'm sure people will go crazy buying it and getting useless accessories.

Thats a good point, listening on the phone surely drains the juice out of it, and what happens if the phone decides to play suicide , all the audio could be lost for ever.
I think dedicated devices are better than alll-in-ones for that precise reason.

How about a device that let's record tv programs and then be able to stream it? Uncle Steve says this is a great product . Time to get rid of your MythTV boxes and cellphones. I-Tunes is the only way!

The iPhone is priced too high for me, but honestly, I hate carrying around a cell phone, audio player, and pda with me. People will look at that and say, "If I buy all three it costs just as much," which will let them rationalize paying way too much for it.

I would much prefer one device to do all things, though. I do like the touchscreen interface, too. Looks to me like it would be better than those mini keyboards. I would never put down that kind of cash for it, but it's the first all-in-one device I've seen that I would actually like to have. It's scary to have that one point of failure, but I'm sure that eventually such devices will come down to the price of an expensive cell phone, and if it works with linux, I'll buy it.

The only thing that I really don't like about the iPhone is the battery life. I think it's specd at something like 5 hours talk time. Then you have to deduct from that any time that you spend listening to music. bluetooth energy and standby time.

Personally if the price point were lowered by about $100 and the battery life about 50% better I'd have no problem going out to get one of them.

I think that it looks promising, honestly, but agree that the battery life is an issue. That, and tht fact that cingular is probably the single worst provider I ever signed on with (and I've been with a bunch of carriers). We're probably getting my wife a Blackberry Pearl phone so she can check her email from out-and-about, even though (generally speaking) EDGE sucks.

I used NEXTEL for almost 10 years and a few prior to that Sprint. Sprint is a scourge that infects all. I had to choose between data plans essentially and Cingular is the least shitty. Verizon likes to play semantics on the definition of DATA. TMobile has shit phones. That leaves only Cingular in the end. If it was not for the merger, I would be still with my NEXTELs and not complaining about the crappiness that ensued.

The weekend of the actual merger of labor and facilities my account got hosed. Most wireless acct level options were screwed over.

Couldnt pay my bill online anymore, or over the phone (automated options that is). I either had to mail payments in, or setup bank billpay (which I ended up doing).

Towards the end, I lost all capability of voicemail. The techs could not fix it without changing my number and me getting a different phone. I thold them to suck it, and even if I took a new phone, I couldnt deal with the new number. Business is capable when people can communicate. I cant spend the time redistributing my contact info to all those that I left cards with and so forth. I bit the bullet and RAN Flash Gordon speed to Cingular and got the one phone that could do what I wanted that they had in stock.

I havent been happier. Cingular is AT&T, but this is on par with what NEXTEL was for me (at least in Milwaukee here).

Back to the iPhone, if there are two batteries, then I would actually use it for music/podcastage. But I primarily want a good data phone. The RAZR is not that. I want something that will also tether well (which I hope it does, otherwise we have more serious issues ...). Primarily it would be for doing Treo like work. That would be a very close second choice for me at this point.
