Steve Jobs on DRM

Was reading the Wall Street journal today and on the front page is an editorial about Steve Jobs and DRM. It did surprised me. There is a quote from Jobs that says "It's hard to belive that just 3% of the music on the average iPod is enough to losk users into buying only iPods in the future."

If Jobs were actually anti-DRM, he wouldn't keep breaking things like DAAP sharing for linux, sharpemusique, and the ability to easily strip the DRM from aacs. The third is arguable, obviously, since he needs to play ball to keep selling his music, but there is simply no reason to keep breaking "iTunes Music Sharing" so you can't *stream* music from a Mac if you run linux. You couldn't stream locked material in any event. I think Jobs is full of shit.

I agree. Uncle Steve is full of it. He can talk all he wants to make himself look like the "good guy". Until he does something about it I won't give it any weight.

DRM free music stores I use regularly:
magnatune.com
audiolunchbox.com
mp3tunes.com (not regularly, actually, but have bought a few albums)
Magnatune is awesome, especially if you like eclectic music (Russian Church Choir anyone?). mp3tunes is the same in some respects, but are closer to cdbaby than magnatune, imo. Audiolinchbox has a lot more mainstream music available, plus lots of indie stuff. Perhaps they aren't as cool philosophically as either of the other two , I suppose that's open to debate, but their music *is* DRM-free, and they stand by that as being one of their basic tenets.

Yeah there are some alternatives. However I have a problem, I am anti-DRM, a OSS guy, and an audiophile but also a cheap bastard. I don't want to have to buy audio CDs because they are expensive and I want high quality OGG vorbis, FLAC, or WAV. So I use a certain russian website.
I tried Magnatune and couldn't find anything I like unfortunately. Although I guess alternatives are rising so after they get real popular we could push them towards better codecs.
