I have tried minuet before, its a os written in complete assembly , fits on a floppy disk, includes a basic web browser, irc client and a few games if you buy the cdrom instead of downloading.

the 64 bit version is closed source proprietary
the 32 bit version is gpl'd

what have you guys used beside some form of unix,windows,mac os/x

There's BeOS, which is now know defunct. But there are several projects based on it like Zeta and Haiku.

i have heard quite a crowd saying beos was a good desktop operating system.
never tried it myself, what do you think?

BeOS is quite nice. Unfortunately the lack of drivers is a huge issue, especially when it comes to soundcards. There is a community surrounding it which does some development, not unlike the Linux community, but it is quite small. So drivers are definitley limited. There are sites that give lists of compatible hardware, so if you planned to use BeOS you would have to outfit your PC accordingly, unless of course you knew how to develop your own dirvers. It would have been nice had BeOS caught on.
