Am I missing something, or will the 770 basically not play 99% of the video material you throw at it (web or other)? Is there a codecs pack I need or something? I see a few alternatives to the "video player" on the maemo site, but they're all listed as beta or similar, including the mplayer port.
I have even gone so far as to encode an avi to their standard, and the thing still tells me "nope." I know Allen and Linc have talked about how sweet the video on this thing is, so it must be doable, but so far all I've been able to watch on it is the "discovery channel" trailer. Does anyone have a link to a comprehensive list of exactly what you can and cannot watch or listen to on the 770?
Oh, and I can't get it to play oggs either...

Well, canola looks very promising! I tried to install it but it keeps complaining about a missing library - I'll try getting it installed a different way in the morning. Right now my 3 year old is busy drawing on it - he's completely nuts about it!
The n800 looks very sweet, but I can't understand why they ditched the clamshell, which is seriously awesome, and the new stylus design looks horrible to me.

Thanks for the heads up! I spent a while trolling around their boards last night and did install the ogg player as well as a terminal app. I did a du on my flash, and discovered that all of the videos I'd transferred over were 0 bytes for some reason, so that explains that one. As for encoding, I just used mencoder, but I was very careful to follow their specs - I'm planning on cobbling together a little perl script of my own to help get my perl chops back up, too. So now the question is not why it won't play files, but why the files didn't transfer correctly.

Well, so far, I'd have to give the nokia 770 a "meh" rating. The major "linux" aspect of it I can see is that it requires far more dicking with than most consumers would want to do/could do in most cases. And wtf is up with a linux based system that *doesn't* do ogg OOTB? I mean wouldn't that be an obvious gimme? Maybe that's just me...
Since I brought the little dood home, I have reflashed the entire image twice, added a kernel patch, cfdisked my memory card, and run mkfs.vfat on the same since for some reason, the factory vfat wasn't allowing transfers to complete. My 770 is only loading itself as "full speed" using the uhci_hcd driver, so transfers are painfully slow - a 75 meg file is taking around 7 min to transfer. Also, for some reason both my kubuntu running lappy and my arch workstation insist that it's not a removable device, so pmount isn't working. Overall, not a great, IMO.
My 3 y/o boy is bananas about it though. He can watch avis on it, and can paint with "sketch." He loves that. Personally, though, I'm having a hard time coming up with a use for it so far. I can beam into boxen, and can surf, but I can't say I see what people are making such a big fuss over yet. Or maybe I'm not its target audience. Or maybe I just haven't figured it out yet. In any case, it may end up being a present for my kid - his b-day is just around the corner, he really, really loves it, and so far, I just don't.
