For a while now, I've gotten to like the ability to have frequently used apps running, but not visible when not in use, and not on the taskbar. For example, I love Yakuake. I hit a button, it slides out, and I have a large terminal right there, ready to go.

What I want to know, is there a similar styled app, but for note entry? When I use my work mac, I have Sidenote. It is a nice little app, to where I can have a simple notepad ready and available at all times, to write down any ideas before I forget it, but doesn't take up any screen real estate what so ever. I just set it to slide from the right side of the screen. No need to take my hands off the keyboard when I have an idea strike me, and dont have to load up a program to write it down, hoping I don't forget all the details before I can get it up. Plus something like this helps keeps things not so cluttered (which, right now, I have quite a bit open, Dave Yates style, so less clutter is good).

Also, what similarly styled apps do you guys like an use?

Since you like yakuake so much, why not have a tap open in yakuake with nano or vim open, so that you could simply pull down yakuake and there would be your notepad?

Personally, I like to use screen on the terminal or have one of my text terminals with vim always open and ready for notes. Then my notepad is only a ALT+CTRL+F2 or F3 away.

Or you could use a window manager like ion which allows you to have workspaces or "tabbed windows" which are only a control key combo away. On my graphical workstations I run ion with a workspace called "write" which I can access with WINDOWS-KEY + 4 because it is the forth workspace that I have configured. There I have vim running all the time.

I'd prefer not to do that, since I run numerous terminal sessions (not counting ones dedicated for ssh, I have 4 going right now, and usually have another 3-4 for ssh access to various machines), and don't want to have to switch between then till I remembered which is the note one.

On the desktop front, I like having it on the same desktop, or accessable across all, because I sometimes I will be writing down stuff I see on screen, or using what is on screen as reference. Run into the same issue if I do the terminals (Plus, something is screwed up on this machine, where a combo of control alt and a F key doesnt seem to work, and my winkey appears to be dead too.).

I was just wondering if there was anything like that already available, since I know such things exist for Windows and OSX, and if there was something already wouldn't make much sense to try and make it on my own. But as it stands, probably looks like I'll end up brushing up on my C, getting a layout of how yakuake does the sliding effect, and either bastardizing that or mimicking it.

yeah, already looked at basket, and while it looks neat, not quite what I am after.

Ouch - jeez basket looks cluttered. I'm looking for a good note taking app, period, let alone one that just disappears. Mostly I've found myself using kate and having multiple sessions open at once - not ideal but gets the job done. Sidenote did indeed kick ass.

look into Tomboy, seems nice.
