Maybe I just fall for tricks easily or I'm an optimist, but Dell seems to be serious about putting Ubuntu on their machines. I know some people want them to push it towards the typical Windows user, which I would see as a business mistake myself, but I do believe they're targeting us linux enthusiasts and I'm already saving up to buy a laptop from them.

Supposedly HP will be offering machines with Linux pre-installed as well:

"Still, Dell is successfully targeting a key market niche: Frustrated users who want a viable, fast, secure alternative to Windows. And Ubuntu -- like Apple's (AAPL) Mac OS -- is a welcome option worth considering."
looks like I just saw that little light bulb go on in his/her head. hope the snowball is starting to gain speed. I think we are finally seeing the truth happening.
hopefully this is the start of something and finally people will see what microsoft really is - a marketing/advertising/legal firm and not a software company. 5 years for vista - I still can't believe it.

That is good news, hopefully this becomes a regular thing.

I like old dell gx110's, they make fine disk-less over-sized thin client machines on our ltsp network. I may take one though and use it as a video server.

*drools* That Inspiron 1420N looks amazing. I will probably order one next week. Luckily I waited for a while to make my laptop purchase. Go Dell!

Man, you're making it hard for me to be patient! I desperately want one of those, too!

Hehe sorry.

I have been waiting about 2 months till laptops started shipping with Santa Rosa. I wasn't expecting Dell to jump on Linux so much but it couldn't have been better timing. As far as I know there aren't going to be any major changes in the laptop world for a while so what are you waiting for? Or is it simply that you shouldn't spend the money right now?

Here is one of those 1420N laptops priced out with a few upgrades:

Ubuntu version 7.04
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 14.1 inch display (1440x900)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Size: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card

Not bad at all.

I wonder how much this is going to hurt the dedicated linux lappy and box sellers.

That last sentence nails it, I probably shouldn't spend the money right now. We just bought a lot of furniture recently, which drained my bank account quite a bit. I probably have enough saved up, but I do try to be responsible. I might be able to buy it next month after I've paid off all my credit card bills, but I should probably wait until August to be safe.
Can anyone see what the laptop looks like with different colors? I can't get a picture on the flash or list version of the site. I might want something besides jet black if it looks sharp.

Here's a $350 coupon code for systems over $1399:
TSD1$NG00WFD4N
I tried it and it works with both the 1420N and E1505N laptops. It expires on July 6.

Great Scot!
That pretty much seals the deal for me, then. I'm going to do a proper assessment of my finances, but that coupon is too good a deal to pass up.

So, for all you guys who are buying these laptops, are you going to keep Ubuntu?
