Everex Readies Sub-$300 Linux Notebooks

After introducing a $198 Linux desktop this week, PC vendor Everex said it will bring Linux laptops under $300 to users next year.

The laptops will come with 12.1-inch to 17-inch screens and run the GOS version of the OS, built on Ubuntu Linux 7.10. It will include icons providing one-click access to Web sites like Facebook and multiple Google Web applications.

The company also plans to introduce other mobile devices like ultramobile PCs, said Paul Kim, director of marketing for Everex, a U.S. subsidiary of Taiwanese firm First International Computer.

The notebooks will be introduced in the first half of next year, Kim said. The company provided no additional details, other than saying the mobile devices will be competitively priced.

I'd really like to see a super light weight 12.1" $300 laptop.

Me too. I'm not that interested in their desktop. I might wait on the eeePC just to see how this turns out.

sounds interesting, it all will depend on the specs , you can pick up small laptops with 13.1 inch screens of ebay and the like that are a few years old.
Of course those will have tiny 40 GB drives,possibly no DVD reader, 512mb ram.

I can't imagine these being anything other than throwaway crap boxen for some reason. More ofthen than not these days, inexpensive means shitty.

With the price of everything coming down, relatively, it makes you not want to get anything. In the meantime I plan to make lemonade out of my throwaways.

Not entirely true, but I'd rather have one solid machine that lasts 5 years than 5 junky devices that fall apart in 6 months to a year. This is why I tend to save up and buy lappys like thinkpads rather than the cheapest dell I can find. It's probably a wash pricewise, but in the meantime I'm enjoying a nice solid lappy that's a pleasure to use instead of the garbage most people I work with use.

Oh, and yes, I do have a tendency to save up money for something I want only to spend it on something for someone I care about instead. Case in point, I was saving up for an XO lappy, but spent that money on an ipod touch for my wife instead. She absolutely loves it, fwiw, and I have to admit that it is a very slick little device. Far nicer in most respects than my 770.

I do not really go out and buy junky systems anymore. People just give them to me now. For the first time in a long time a mb in a free gateway g6-350 bit the dust. I think I have a better replacement for it anyway. If something is gone, I am not afraid to toss it after it is scoured for parts or a reusable case. My old socket 478 p4 machine I built from parts is about the newest I have. The desktop machine I use the most is an amd 1.5. and i may also have up running two machines at the most as servers for bkup and beta web testing. If I have company over, there are additional machines set up. At the office we have an old 800mhz duron running as an ltsp server pushing 3 thin clients (2 compaq t30's and a neostation.) and sometimes one or two semi-gutted machines being used a thin clients. I think I am pretty frugal with equipment and get a good bang for the buck..
