Dapper no eth0

Holy mackeral, was this a pain in the butt. After installing my 'rent's new dsl service I figured it was time to upgrade my father's ubuntu machine; it's been running breezy. I took the lazy way out and instead of downloading an iso and replacing everything with a clean install, I just apt-get dist-upgrade to dapper. The upgrade took a while but afterwards everything seemed fine until I noticed there was not network connectifity.

Everything seemed fine but there was no eth0 device. The modules were loaded; dmesg showed that it was coming up as eth0; but no device.

I searched and I poked and I tore my hair out when after about an hour later and on the third card I noticed that there was an eth1 device. The card was being labeled as eth1. Very odd.

A final search on google pointed me to a file /etc/iftab. That file was assigning eth0 to a specific mac addressed device. Once I got rid of this file and rebooted everything was back to normal. What a pain in the butt! It made me cry!
