ONE OF THE potentially biggest announcements at CES will probably go unnoticed by most, a Linux box from Shuttle. Get ready for a low priced machine from a big name, a first that I am aware of.

When you don't have to pay the MS monopoly tax, you save a huge chunk of money from your Bill of Materials (BoM). When you don't have to support MeII, you can provide the same user experience with a lot lower hardware spec. That saves more money.

In the end, that allowed Shuttle to come up with a $199 computer, quite a deal. As far as I am aware, this is the first major manufacturer box to break the $200 barrier. Well done guys. ยต

I'm interested to see how it compares to the Everex gPC. I'm betting it will be considerably better. I hope they didn't go with VIA.

You can spend 200 dollars plus tax and shipping or from ebay :

Dell Optiplex GX110 P3 733Mhz 256MB 10GB CD for $9.99 with shipping of $19.99 .

I do not recommend dell, but only the idea that there is an alternative to use your own version of linux.

It's a Celeron, but the barebones unit is upgradeable to a Core2Duo.

I agree, I like that whimsical, colorful design. Sure beats the dull gray Antec box I put my computer in, even though it's hidden under the desk. I might have to look into these.

One of my brothers has a Shutllebox and he says they have very good support. Shuttle also says there will be a $99 barebones version of the KPC as per the article reference above. That could put a crimp in the nas market. That would be a box to consider!

After getting my wife MacMini for xmas, I am seriously considering getting myself a small box like this and packing my current enormous monstrosity with disks and sticking it in a closet next upgrade cycle. Small, silent, and powerful FTW - I'm going to keep an eye on these for sure. IIRC, system76 has a MacMini clone, too - I might take a peek at them too.

Holy shit! No, I guess I wont - those system76 miniboxen at nearly a grand for a not-quite-as-good box as the mac mini cheap edition. To hell with that.

I don't know about silent. I'm sure these little boxes come with plain Jane ATX, or maybe microATX, power supplies. I hope they ship with quiet ones.

Techlounge says:
Cooling will be provided by Intel's stock processor heatsink, although users will have the option of upgrading to Shuttle's own ICE cooler.
Looks like using the ICE cooler might make it quieter:

I don't know if it's silent or not. I know the power supply on my own computer makes too much noise, though. If these Shuttle boxes really are silent, I will absolutely buy one.

Sorry, I didn't mean to indicate these would be silent - the specs on these little guys are kind of lacking. I meant that when I replaced my wife's aging Quicksilver tower with a box not much larger than my Soekris, it became a lot quieter in this room. I also realized that her little teeny brick is actually more powerful than my hugeass computer which was over 3x as much (just the proc, mobo, ram and video card) a year ago. I gained a lot of respect for the form factor and features apple managed to pack into the little beast and wouldn't mind having something similar.

Sad to say, but I absolutely lust for the apple remote and front row. That is s too awesome for words.

BTW MeII is Inquirer slang for Windows ME 2 aka Vista, those pesky Brits... wait?
