Asus looks to improve/expand splash top environment

Splashtop is a quick boot lightweight Linux environment where users can watch DVDs, listen to music, view photos without booting into the regular OS. More Linux goodness from Asustek.

Splashtop is a very cool concept - I've been reading about it a bunch recently. This is shaping up to be a very interesting year for linux, especially if companies like asus continue to push it on the desktop. In many ways, this type of thing a a lot more interesting and important than the nokia tablet stuff, IMNSHO.

Sounds great, but my only issue is that a lot of this cool technology is doing things with Linux that no-one else can legally. It's great that they are using Linux to play dvd's and such but really, I would love to be able to play DVD's on Linux legally on my distrobution of choice.

I guess I'm more of an ESR-type person in this case. So far, the only thing I've seen make any progress towards more people using linux as a desktop platfor is the inclusion of non-free stuff in a mostly free environment. It really does seem like it's more important to increase adoption and then use marketshare numbers to work on opening up other technologies. Then again, I hate freedom
