And do Apple users care? No. OS X is a desktop operating system, it's not designed for supercomputers.

I'm no computer science expert, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that having an OS with a file system that isn't complete and utter crap is helpful even for non-supercomputers.

I am becoming less enamored with apple osx. Unless you do command line, It was always easier to multitask under xp or linux. Files and settings seemed to disappear sometimes on the Apples where I used to work. Our personal macs are getting the linux treatment now. No more problems!!!

I do not know anything about computer science either. But, I pretend to play someone who does on tv. (not really...) My younger brother won't use a mac, actually has a masters in cs. I usually ignore the way he does things anyway. It is more fun not knowing what you are doing.

Linus Torvalds woke up on Mars today (or maybe it was Oz), and had this to say about Windows Vista and Apple's OS X:

I don't think they're equally flawed. I think Leopard is a much better system. On the other hand, (I've found) OS X in some ways is actually worse than Windows to program for. Their file system is complete and utter crap, which is scary. I think OS X is nicer than Windows in many ways, but neither can hold a candle to my own (Linux). It's a race to second place.

I guess when you're famous you can say inane things and get away with it. Yes, Linux does some things better than Mac OS X and Microsoft's Windows Vista on the desktop (security, maybe), but let's be honest: the Linux desktop is "utter crap" compared to either OS X or Windows when it comes to the thing that matters most: usability.

If normal people can't use it, it just doesn't matter how beautifully architected it is. Sorry, Linus. Everyone has to be wrong sometimes. This is your turn to shine.

That Matt Asay article is ridiculous. Linus says Apple's HFS+ is crap, and Asay acts like he's talking about the user interface. Yeah, I can see where he might get confused, because I know when I hear "filesystem" I just immediately think of the entire graphical user interface. The two terms are practically interchangeable. What ludicrous garbage.

Honestly, I try to keep a list of professional trolls who wish they were Dvorak or Rob Enderle, but it's almost impossible to keep up with them all, there are just so many imitators out there writing shocking, misleading headlines and badly written articles. In this article, I don't think you can even qualify it as "taking a quote out of context" because the quote IS in context, and the filesystem part is mentioned in the quote, and Matt Asay just went ahead and intentionally misconstrued the quote anyway to suit his trollish purposes.

Even if Linus had been talking about the UI, "Normal people" can't use OS X, either, judging by my experience with a dozen iMacs and just as many "normal people" at work. I get a barrage of questions, daily, concerning just about everything. OS X still holds on to some bad UI decisions, like the Menu bar at the top of the screen. Separating the menus from the application window just makes for confused users who haven't learned the concept of applications having "focus." The dock doesn't really register with them either, apparently, judging from the number of users who choose to move a window down near the bottom of the screen instead of minimizing it to the dock. And you can just forget about the nightmare printing to multiple printers.

That reminds me of the hassle that os/x had with non-postscript networked printers. I had a nightmare trying to print on a networked hp injet until I installed gutenprint. I never really had a problem working with multiple printers though.

I remember years ago when according to the trades the Apple community was not enamored with Digital Research (GEM) and Microsoft (ms windows) suggesting they were copycats. At the little store I worked at, we were give notice from our vendors that we might have to pull those products off the shelf.

Things never seem to change. After listening to all the gui/wysiwyg wars, maybe using only the command line might actually have some virtue.
