I think at this point you would have to consider Google Apps - GMail for your domain also a competitor in this space.

As a replacement for Exchange? I think you'd be EXTREMELY hard-pressed on that.

Having never worked with Exchange, but having worked with Google Apps for your Domain, I'm curious about what Exchange does that Google Apps doesn't. I really don't know what all Exchange does beyond basic email and calendar sharing.

It does more basic email and calendar sharing.

Seriously though, I've used Notes, Exchange, and Zimbra servers in the past 10 years. Once I got past the arrogance of the senior members in the Zimbra forums, it is one of the best I've seen. I really hope that Yahoo lets it get off the boat before it's affected by the whole Microsoft takeover attempt. Zimbra's finally moved away from using Tomcat, so it is a lot easier to setup and maintain.

Exchange has a special place in my heart after witnessing first hand the whole 5.1 Standard vs. Enterprise Edition debacle. Standard only allowed your users to store a combined total of 2GB in the entire message store before it completely blew up. You then had to truncate the mailboxes to restore it and then beg the users to clean up their mailboxes while simultaneously explaining to them why some of their messages from that day were gone.. It was a very messy process.

Notes was okay, but the version I was using had a tendency to corrupt Notes IDs and without a valid Notes ID, you couldn't access your mailbox.

Time to upgrade from squirrelmail i guess.

Google about to drop the other Enterprise shoe on Microsoft?

I’m hearing about a few things that Google is planning to do to newly compete with Microsoft’s enterprise offerings.

Several people have told me about an offline version of Gmail, coming soon.
Other people say that Google, or a company working with Google, is going to come out with a new server that will let corporations replace their Exchange servers with ones made by Google. Both groups told me under condition that I not reveal who they are.

Now, it might be that my sources are pulling my legs, but I don’t think so. The news is coming from too many different places. I’m reporting this to explain that Google seems like it’s about to apply more pressure in the enterprise space and see if anything else is happening that I don’t know about. The audience here is far smarter and far more connected than I am.

There now are several companies with enterprise like email packages built into to their web based management products. Openexchange, Group office, SugarCRM, and etc. ULteo per distrowatch has just come out with a distro that serves OpenOffice via the web. That should make everything more interesting also.

The unfortunate bottom line is that almost no one is looking for a replacement for exchange, IME.
