Hope you like the GCC screensaver. You'll burn many hours tweaking & configuring it. Hopefully your girlfriend is patient. Very very patient!

I moved it into here because you were talking Linux. The Anything goes forum is related to anything besides Linux/technology. I'd say the GCC screensaver qualifies as Linux.

As a Gentoo user, I can tell you the compile times are really exaggerated. According to my system, I spend on average 1 minute and 46 seconds per build on a dual-core Athlon 64. Considering that my machine is up 24/7 anyway, it's hardly noticeable. Plus it's nice to be able to compile binaries with the march=native flag. All you Ubuntu users are stuck with march=generic! Muahahaha! Suckers...

As a long gone Gentoo user , I would not listen to Ben if your only running a server on gentoo then maybe average compile time is within minutes but as desktop its hours. Openoffice takes 5 > hours a less you compile on a cluster or on a super computer on top of that there is GNOME or KDE to waste a day building Having a native os is a tragedy , what if you change the motherboard,cpu and ram to something different and continue using the same hardrive, you get the same hassle as running windows, your need to re-install or could just recompile a kernel but then all the apps you compiled might have to be re-compiled too if you compiled for say a intel core duo 2 and you replaced it with a AMD X2 Phenom .

Maybe your one of those BDSM types , if not avoid Gentoo like world of warcrack

I'm really late on this thread, but did want to say, "Howdy" to Fab. Good to see you in the forum here.

Gentoo was a lot of fun, I ran it for over a year, and enjoyed it. There was occasional breakage, but it was always minor and rare, and a quick trip to the I didn't mind starting an install when I went to bed and waking up to find it done, or else going to work and coming home from work to find it done already. I learned a lot about linux just running the stage 1 install.

I still feel like I need to do Linux from Scratch at least once.

Re: Gentoo, I have to agree with Vogateer. I ran it for a couple of years and learned a lot. I think the most important thing to remember with Gentoo is to update frequently. I eventually switched to a binary distro after I had been working away for a couple of months and came back to a system that wanted to pretty much rebuild the entire OS.

That said, I think the documentation the Gentoo team produce is second to none!

Being a native Texan, it is interesting to hear someone in Germany say:Howdy, y'all! I am sure I still say y'all, but Howdy, I only hear that from tenderfeet and others at the livestock rodeo or up at the Texas State fairgrounds. (We pronounce rodeo as row-dee-oh instead of row-day-oh). Also Houston is pronounced hughston not houseton like they do on Law and Order Criminal Intent. I live a bit south of there. Gentoo seems really neat, but I have never really taken the time to play with it.
