Which should I get???

Post by gorkon » Mon Apr 21, 2008 12:49 pm

I want to get one of those little low cost machines. Here are my choices:

Amazon has the non web cam 4 GB version of the Asus Eee 701 for $389 with a 2 GB Simm.

Amazon also has the 8 GB version of the Eee for $531.

HP has the new mini note with a 120 GB hard disk plus SLED 10 for $549 and a version with 4 GB of flash for 499.

Also in the running is the Nokia N810.

Choices choices!

I am tending to look more to the HP, but I am not sure which to get. My goal is to spend less then 500 of the 1500 we have coming from Uncle Sam and I want something small in size that I can cart along with the normal corporate laptop I lug everyday.

Well, speaking from experience with the eeePC, it's awesome. So I can only think that the 8.9" version is going to be that much more awesomer!

It all boils down to what you'll use more. If you want a smaller embedded device, multimedia player, GPS, or voip device go with the Nokia. If you want a laptop then go with either the EEEPC or the HP. Before jumping on the HP I'd wait for a review or two. We know certain people around here are all into the EEEPC. Might be good to see a head to head review.

If you can wait a little I would hold out for when HP replaces the VIA C7-M in the Mini-Note with the new VIA Isaiah. The Isaiah is a drop-in replacement that will work in current motherboards that use the the C7-M, so these devices should hit the market before we start seeing Atom based machines. The Isaiah offers twice the performance at the same power consumption. I also really like the bigger more usable keyboard on the Mini-Note.

If you have to get it today, you should go for the cheapest eee 2G Surf for $299. How often are you really going to need more than 512 MB RAM for the lite kind of stuff you'd likely be doing on this device anyway?

Then another $200 for the N800! A little bit of both?

I would say the main reason I wouldn't get the 2g surf is that if I EVER want to install anything, then I don't think 2 Gigs will be enough space. Anyone know what the base install of Ubuntu is with the codec support and flash installed??

If I recall reading correctly, if you do a base install of eeeXbuntu on the 4g it takes up like 90% of the space (but it might be a bit less) and that includes just about everything you would want (codec support too). I think that is what I remember, but I have not tried installing eeeXbuntu yet.

Now, on the other hand, eeePuppy is sweet too, fits nicely on a 1gb flash card and boots right off of there with no problem.

From this link. I think it was posted in an earlier post.

I have to add my vote for the Nokia N810. This thing is just awesome - you really forget you have it around and it packs a large amount of features.
-wifi
-bluetooth
-mini SDcard
-built-in speakers
-camera
-GPS

Also, just looking at the community driven wiki for hacking this thing up is just awesome.

Actually I am wondering has anyone tried to expand the flash drive on this. Is it even possible without doing major surgery? If I could save up the bucks for a big fat flash drive I can upgrade an Eee later.

Saw this on Engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/04/the-20gb-eee-pc-mod/

They soldered 2 USBports to the board (apparently the header is there, there just isn't a external port) and then put both a flash drive and a bluetooth module.

This might be something I'd do say....after the warantee is up! :P
