It's good to hear that the last bits will be opened up completely. Maybe Eclipse will have the latest sun jdk added as a dependency. Right now when you install Eclipse java-gcj is the default run time. You have to manually go into config file and point it to sun-java6. A little bit of a pain that should get corrected once Java is completely opened up.

"With only two weeks to go now before JavaOne, its annual Javaganza for developers, Sun has revealed that Java is at long last to be made 100% open source. "We're trying to get Java into places it's never been before," Rich Sands, group manager for developer marketing at Sun, told an interviewer on Tuesday."

I suppose this is good news, but at this point does it really matter? Is it too late for Java to be a player on Linux? I see very few popular Linux apps written in Java. Those programmers not using C or C++ seem to have moved on to dynamic languages like Python or Ruby. Even Perl has more of a prescence on Linux than Java. Also, any goodwill this move earns among open source programmers is undermined by Sun's announcement that not all of the new MySQL features will be freely available. I know I won't be using Java any time soon, and I've just bought a few books on postgresql and firebird for summer reading. To me, Sun is still part of the problem, not part of the solution.

I make my living coding Java (and other languages) so it's definitely worth posting about it (at least to me). Sun should of done this sooner but it's better late than never. I don't agree with Sun's handling of MySQL but I'm not freaking out over it and migrating EVERYTHING over to another database. At least not yet. Sun's relationship with Linux has been bipolar in the past but I think overall they're moving in the right direction under Jonathon Schwartz. If anybody hates Java then don't use it. It's your choice.

Strange that you didn't also mention PHP. With as much criticism as PHP gets it still has managed to become incredibly popular in a relatively short time, with a huge portion of web apps coded in it... this forum for instance.

I guess I should have been more specific. I don't see many popular *user desktop apps* written in Java. I can't speak for its use in business. What I would really like to know is if anyone thinks Java is now poised to be the next big language on Linux, and should aspiring Linux programmers invest in learning Java now instead of another language.(Hint: Show topic).
