I'd just like to mention that what Sun has just released is not called Project Indiana anymore, now it's just OpenSolaris. And also, this is the first time Sun has really released an OS dubbed OpenSolaris, the name was used only for the development project and infrastructure/framework before today.

OpenSolaris is a hybrid 32/64-bit system. The kernel and most of the core components are 64-bit for capable machines, while the userland is 32-bit, so it can address >4GB of RAM. It works pretty much the same as Linux on PPC64. You need a 64-bit kernel, but the applications are 32-bit since there's no benefit of running a 64-bit UL on PowerPC. Same as SPARC. SPARC and PowerPC don't have the same limitations as the x86 architecture, so there's no real advantage of running a pure 64-bit system -- just extra overhead.

Speaking of OpenSolaris, I did an install on my laptop, and it has really matured since the early days. All my hardware was detected automatically, it has a nice GUI installer (a la Ubuntu) on a live CD, and it also has a nice GUI package manager and Device driver utility. It's a hair slower than Linux, and there is less software readily available for Solaris, but it makes a fine desktop. Adobe provides Flash 9 for Solaris, Firefox works, Java works, nVidia has graphics drivers available, most sound cards are supported, it has ZFS as the default file system... not bad at all.

It comes with GNOME, not JDS.

Dude, I would never ever equate GNOME, a part of the GNU project, with proprietary software! That would not just be offending GNOME's developers and users, but would be outright false. I personally prefer KDE over GNOME, but that's not to say that I think GNOME should not exist, or is somehow "bad". GNOME is not a reason or even an argument for me to not check out an operating system that might be doing something new.

There are several respins that feature KDE in any case - not sure any of them are based on the official release yet, though.
