Since Linc was not able to tell us what his machine naming schemes are, tell us how you do it.
I name them after people from the Corleone family -- Michael, Vito, Clemenza etc

I name mine after celestial objects, mostly planets, moons and dwarf-planets. For example my main workstation's name is earth, my Mac min's name is pluto (Since it's a small machine), my two Dell OptiPlex GX150 machines which I use as servers, have the names uranus and neptune, and so on. The domain name I use is irisnebula.net.

Yeah, I'm a little bit of a space geek, I'll admit that.

I mentioned it on the show...
I decided to use cryptids. It was a fun naming scheme and there are lots of names to choose from. Currently I have yeti, sasquatch, and wendigo for the machines I use most often at home and since my wife likes sea monsters, her laptop is "nessie". There are a lot more to go, but that was the start I made on renaming machines when I had a few minutes to kill renaming them ;-)

Hey, this brings up another interesting topic. What do you all use for your internal network name? I use linc.lan myself. Long ago it was linc.com, but that domain actually exists and I don't want to hijack anyones domain. the .lan domain extension will never hit the internet, so decided to go with that instead (and it works better for internal dns too btw).

I run my own DNS server, because remembering names, instead of IPs is much easier, at least for me. And maintaining a big hosts file on all my machines is a pain, so a DNS server is a good solution in this case. I also own the domains irisnebula.net and irisnebula.org, mainly for shits and giggles, but also just because I like trying to make stuff that I do just for myself, as "real" as possible, within feasibility.

I am so ordinary. I also run a DNS server on my DD-WRT Linksys WRT-54G version 4.0. Because I lacked a creative spark and I was looking for something easy to remember when ssh'ing to my boxes I went with the following, all of which are on one network, in two buildings connected with a wireless bridge:

officepc, homepc, server, geexbox, mobil01

Yes, I know dull, but practical. :-)

I'm partial to mountains and moons: everest, maunakea, diablo, metis, deimos(for all you Doom lovers).

My first exposure to naming was at my college's computer lab where all the machines were named after natural disasters. So my first Unix account was on Tornado or Hurricane. It helps if there are many unique names in the class of names that you're choosing so I'm sure natural disasters can only deal with a small number of servers but then again who says you have be consistent?

If you get another machine, you've got to throw fuji in there!
