Please go to http://twit.tv/ and click on the banner ad for the podtrac survey. Only select floss weekly otherwise you will not be guaranteed that the survey will appear for that show. This is used to gauge the demographic of the audience and the amount of money they can spend. It has a direct influence on advertising.

I think this is a great opportunity to vote on the fact we DO have money we DO buy products and services. We DO NOT like DRM. You might also want to consider the following extract from TWiT 146: Service Unavailable when rating the presenter.

Leo Laporte: Lets starts with the Hans Reiser story since since obviously since Mr. Schwartz, is taking great ride....Did you ever know Hans Reiser ?
Randal Schwartz: I didn't. I've actually not met him, not exchanged e-mail with him, I don't even . . . [Leo cuts in]
Leo Laporte: He's a Linux programmer who wrote the Reiser FS which is a .... [Randal cuts in]
Randal Schwartz: I don't even run Linux on anything that matters, so it doesn't matter to me.
Leo Laporte: But the Reiser FS was the first . . .

Filled out. Also consider sending an email to leo@leotechguy.com encouraging him to talk about free software. I did get a response to http://davidsterry.com/freeform.html when I sent it.

"Randal Schwartz: I don't even run Linux on anything that matters, so it doesn't matter to me."

WTF? So this is our big Twit FLOSS advocate? Sure he talks about opensource programs, but he doesn't know linux or even use it? I love how all these Mac people are all into open source, but I suppose that they have to be after getting raped on prices from Apple and Mac software. I've met many a Mac person who has to find a free open source alternative program, but has no problems plunking down HUGE amounts of cash for anything with the Apple logo on it.

I never thought Randal Schwartz as a FLOSS advocate no more than Leo. Apart from being a over enthusiastic perl programmer , there is nothing that I have noticed to suggest he would be .

Guys, you just hit the nail right on the very forehead. This should come as no surprise to anybody who has listened to merely 3 - 5 episodes of FLOSS "Whenever A Mac Fanboy Gets Around To It" (Touché!).

This is what has been discussed on the show, "recently" (Please do notice the quotes):

PostgreSQL
git
Catalyst for Perl
The Yahoo User Interface Library
POV-Ray
Blender
SQLite
WebDAV
Smalltalk

Notice something about all that? None of it happens to be specific to a free software platform, all of it can be used on Mac OS X, and having listened to all of these episodes, Schwartz never fails to mention that, of course. And Leo tags right along, down that path. Coincidence? I seriously doubt it!!!

(The default politeness of the English language, is a blocker for me to properly express myself here, my native language, Danish, in it's everyday form, is a lot more direct, so forgive me for being very direct from here.)

What am I trying to say? Simple, this whole thing is an outrageous abomination to free software and open source. I feel like we are being treated like dogs, that clean the floor that the oh-so-divine Steve (http://www.troelsjust.dk/?p=202) walks on, with our tongues! I frankly think it's impossible to penetrate Leo's thick skull and snap him into reality. For years I've constantly been surprised how little he keeps up with Linux or ANY free software platform. I remember him blabbering about ipchains over four years after it was replaced in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with iptables. It was Marcel Gagné that explained it to him (Marcel said "Quite a while ago" when Leo referred to the switch). Over four years after SUSE had made their YaST installer automatically handle partitioning during an installation, Leo still blabbered about how installing Linux is difficult because of the partitioning, and how everybody ought to buy a Mac! Get this, when demo'ing SUSE Linux 9.3 on Call For Help, they showed a screenshot of the section where you can select what packages to install, and said that it was the partitioning section and Leo goes "Ah, well already we have gotten complicated!", this moron can't even read the freaking screen! Anybody taking this fool seriously in the area of free software and open source are seriously diluted, or simple smoking something really mind altering.
I find "FLOSS Weekly" more of an insult and false advocacy, at the same time. I've seen times when somebody on one of Leo's shows said something incorrect about Mac OS X, and Leo didn't waste a nano-second to tell them how wrong they were, heck to some degree it's even the case with Windows. But every darn time that the guy let's somebody badmouth Linux, they always get a free reign. Even three years ago, when Pat interviewed Leo, I remember how he was all gong-ho about why he worshipped OS X so much, because parts of FreeBSD was underneath and how he thought BSD was the best UNIX ought there, when Pat asked him whether he was familiar with Linux or ran it on his machines. To each his own, but to make such an arrogant, offensive, and ignorant statement, when Linux runs hospital servers, government security systems, hell, even runs parts of the damn Mars Rover missions these days, and years after continues to let his lackeys make the same sort of disrespectful and, to some (Including myself) offensive comments, I find simply infuriating. :x :x :x

While I agree with ken_fallon that we shouldn't call-bomb Leo's radio show, and instead keep the communication and advocacy positive and civilized, I think fierce, sharp, direct and correct advocacy is fitting.

Rant over, I think I need to go freaking meditate to calm down now!

You know, I was listening to MacBreak Weekly today, and that Andy Ihnatko trashed open source because he's having some problem with his Eee PC. Leo just laughed and said you're going to get some e-mails now, but didn't defend open source or the Eee PC. I've listened to several of his shows, and they're all slanted. I used to listen to them just for information, but I see no point any longer. I removed several of his shows from Bashpodder, and I've got a hair trigger to remove what's left. I'm thinking we should maybe just boycott his crap.

BTW, I e-mailed Andy and said I'd be interested in buying his Eee PC if it was too much for him to operate. And that I actually appreciate free and open software while cherishing my freedom. Unfortunately I couldn't be too strong because it was my work e-mail address, .

I don't want to discredit what you have been saying but do the listerners of twit shows really care about hospital servers, government security systems, mars rover missions for their desktop machine? They care that the mentioned systems works very very well but for their own home use its irrelevant .
This advantage is only acknowledged by us geeks and nerds :P the rest of the desktop using world don't care ....

Ummm, if you re-read my reply, you might see that was not what I said!

I simple lambasted/rebuffed/beat-to-death the statement/argument of "Randal Schwartz: I don't even run Linux on anything that matters, so it doesn't matter to me.". I didn't say anything about "the listerners of twit shows", I simply pointed out how extremely ridiculous the statement was. People have their right to prefer BSD for anything they want (I have such preferences of my own in some areas), but even the freaking FreeBSD developers acknowledge Linux's success. Heck if you go listen to the old bsdtalk interview with Kirk McKusick (Author of the BSD Fast File System) you'll hear him say "Linux has made a very strong run ...", and generally giving it a pad on the back. During that bsdtalk interview a few weeks ago with the FreeBSD core developers, they often mentioned Linux, which Pat thought was an act of jealousy, I thought it was a good pad on the back for Linux.

I managed to get the question asked as on Floss Weekly. He said that he runs BSD on his servers and I'm fine with that. Unfortunately all the people who listened to Twit didn't hear that. Leo completely missed the point and thought it was about a distro war.

I don't think people understand the point of the show. It's NOT a Linux show!!

That should be obvious. If you're expecting a Linux show, no wonder you're disappointed. Anyone who thinks Randal Schwartz isn't a free software advocate hasn't got a clue.

I agree that the show would be better for me if it were more relevant to the Linux community, but that's not the point of the show. It would be nice if the TWiT network did a Linux show, but they don't.

Hey, maybe those of us who know about Linux should do our own weekly tech podcast that focuses on Linux! Oh - never mind. :)

I think it's just lazy to bitch and complain because Leo Laporte isn't doing our job for us. At least the TLLTS guys are off their asses and doing something.
