Q Patt, Leehigh, PA - Wants a home media server. Suggestions?

Thinking about a Linux server. Thoughts? Leo says it’s a great way to go. There are plenty solutions and support. On the other hand, Microsoft’s home server makes it very easy. If you like do it yourself, then Linux is a great project. Security wise, Windows’ home server does have some flaws. There was a flaw for copying files too. But they’ve gotten over that hump.

Leo suggests for both speed and reliability, set up a RAID5 system. It’s redundant, like 4 drives, and you can swap in another drive should it fail. Very secure, fast, takes up less redundancy space than say, RAID1, and is a very good way to setup a home network.

If you’re a do-it-yourself kinda guy, the HP Media Server on Linux works and is a popular choice. SAMBA is a good choice.

Did anyone else notice Leo reccomending Linux for an older PC later in the show? Right around 1:15 or so a guy was trying to get antivirus working on an old 233 Mhz machine, and Leo says he would have run Linux on it instead of Windows.

I also thought the things he had to say about Bill Gates at the very beginning of the show didn't sound much like the money-grubbing freedom hater. I thought his opinions were pretty balanced.

The only issue I have with Leo is that he still thinks Linux is too hard for ordinary folk. Other than that he's o.k.. The real problem is with his sidekicks on his TWIT podcasts (minus FLOSS Weekly). We're playing some Linux and F/OSS hating clips tomorrow night from these people. You'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Those clips were from Mac and Windows shows. I still don't understand why Leo should be a Linux advocate on non-Linux shows, or why people on Mac and Windows shows shouldn't be Mac and Windows fans.

I also don't see a problem with saying Linux is too hard for some people. In my experience it's the truth. Dumb people should use dumb software, especially if they already know how to use Windows or OSX.

I can't imagine my Grandma installing Ubuntu and upgrading it every 6 months. Sorry, it's the truth and it's not Leo's fault.

My dad who's a grandpa is using Linux. I've also converted a bunch of other not so technical people over. My brother in law upgraded his Ubuntu box to HH all by himself. All I ask is that Linux be treated as an equal. Yes a noob can buy a $1200 Apple or $500 for a Dell box with Ubuntu pre-installed. Let people know about all the options. That's all.

Someone I know was a tech for more than a decade said that there are some people who can not handle any os much less windows or osx. There needs to be more education about computers. The more your user knows, the easier it will be to support them. You can not win over everyone. Advanced linux users, if they were smart would spend more time educating users. If you have helped out a user, then it is more likely they will follow what you do in terms of computing. We should start more tech shows like linux basement, lottalinuxlinks, and linux reality, we will more easily gain converts. If you have seen all the glowing messages about how chess griffin has converted people to linux should speak for itself. The best part of tllts that I like is when the hosts talk about how they have solved certain computing issues. I watch the latest video podcast of the source and unbuntu linux was talked about instead of bsd. My jaw dropped quit a bit. Want to make a real footprint for linux. go to windows blogs talking about windows problems and if possible modestly explain how linux cured or prevented the same issue. Forgive me for beign the devil's advocate some times.

I concur. Let's face it, if a person can install windows (spit) from scratch they can install linux from scratch.

That's the point. If someone isn't willing to learn a little about computers, "go buy a Mac" is good advice. You can learn to use computers and save money, or spend some money and have Apple do it for you.

If you're going to save money and install Ubuntu you have to either learn something aobut how to administer a computer or get someone else to do it. Even with a copy of Windows that came with the computer it's necessary to educate yourself to keep it from getting owned or fix it when it eventually breaks itself.

There is no free (as in beer) solution for people who won't learn, unless they have friends to give them free tech support.

My point is if you are a mouse jockey, the basics are the same. when you type in a word processor when you type an e an e gets printed on the the screen. if you go to the file menu, you still are going to have open, save, and etc. How could their be that much difference to a new user??? In general operating systems are so much alike that. if you understand the basics, the os should not matter unless you have been brainwashed by the commercials. The apple we vs them commercials have done more to damage computer education and acceptance than anything else. People have been preprogrammed to accept or not to accept a product based on the idiocy of the commercials that they are exposed to. I would like to see a commercial that show all the major amazing things you can do with a computer (using linux of course) without product placement and then at the end say these tools are brought to you by linux. People will flock to the stores to ask about linux.
