Mac OS X achieved a record 7.95 per cent slice of all operating systems active online in June.

Apple continues to gain marketshare as Microsoft continues its slow decline, at least that's what the latest Net Applications figures suggest.
These figures show that Mac OS X achieved a record 7.95 per cent slice of all operating systems active online in June. Possibly boosted by the eee PC, Linux also saw strong usage gains, with market share up 16 per cent to 0.79 per cent.

There are a lot of linux and bsd users still in the closet so to speak or only use because they ahve to. . I tend to disagree with those numbers. I think the windows percentage should be smaller.

I do not believe it either. With windows is easier to get a accurate number just by looking at pcs sold with it pre-installed and individual figures from off the shelf versions. Mac figures can also be taken like that. However Linux is impossible because only a faction of the install base is from the eeepc that can be counted. What someone installs themselves is hard and near enough impossible to get real stats on.
Even if distros counted downloads, there is still the uncounted number of cds/dvds that friends copy and distribute.
The only way it could be done if a site was setup for people to register how many machines they have installed . This would of course rely on honest users not entering ridiculous amounts of installations. Troels might have to divide his installs between his family to be trusted
I think linux has as much if not more market share as mac.
If this case study is to be used by software houses to decided weather to develop for linux, I think a better idea would be to set up something like dell did with idealstorm , where they asked the market if the linux community wants there products.

Windows Vista 16.1%
lol, that is pathetic, and how long have vendors been shoving Vista down peoples throats?
Mac OS X is actually at HALF that, which is pretty impressive.

And Fedora have done just that, they have a system called Smolt for just this purpose, which openSUSE are adopting as well.
You can see the stats here:

Linux Counter has existed for ages, although it isn't even close to being accurate.

Maybe one could add the results from the debian based "popularity contest" info. We have 40-50 units total at all our locations of which maybe 10 are thin clients. Only two or three are actively set up as a windows production box. Of those, we use only one a just few days of the year.
