This is for Linc. I have ubuntu running on an old 266 Tangerine Toiletseat iBook w/ 160 mb of ram and a 3 gig drive. It runs beautifully. Of course, I had to trim down the desktop to xfce4, but it's pretty snappy all things considered. I can't play avis on it or anything, though this is largely due to the complete garbage video card, but it plays most basic linux games quite well.

Those would be the perfect laptops for kids if they only came with anything approaching decent specs -- my two year old beats the hell out of that thing, and it bounces, doesn't break. The handle is also very nice for kids.

I too have a tangerine imac 266 with 256 meg of ram and use the standard ubuntu install and it runs quite nicely. - gnome desktop - I changed the hard drive to typcial 40 gig 7200 rpm disk and that helped a lot.

the desktop isn't going to break any speed records but I could use it for a desktop and my daughter currently uses it for a desktop dual booting os 9 and ubuntu.

we use os9 for some of her old games that were written for os 9.

that leads me to a little annoyance I have. - I installed osx jaguar on it and I bought a game that said it was written for osx but it still ran the os 9 emulator and that is just a no go on this machine so I ditched os x and just run os9 and ubuntu. I am currently trying to get os mac on linux trying to run on ubuntu so the dual boot goes away - I got it to start up and run but I am not quite there yet but it seems to run better than os9 on osx - go figure. when the hell are the kids games makers going to stop the os9 writing and write NATIVE osx apps. If this happens with the intel chip switch I think it will be a mess but that is just me.

anyway congrats on show 100 - liked what marcel said about linux desktop - it is ready and is a hell of lot easier to install than windows anyday.
