Otellini was asked by reporters during the company’s quarterly conference call to expound upon his thoughts on the diminutive, 45nm processor and how its place in Intel's product lineup would affect other low-end processors like the Celeron.

"We do not see [Atom] replacing Celeron," said Otellini. "If you look at the netbook products being built around Atom, they’re all lower-priced, lower features, smaller screen size notebooks aimed at first-time buyers or the second, third or fourth machine in a household. We don’t see any cannibalization."

When pressed further, Otellini went into further detail with regards to the performance of Intel's Atom processor. "[Atom] is less than a third of the performance of our Centrino (high-end mobile processor)," added Otellini. "You’re dealing with something that most of us wouldn’t use."

I would agree that traditional cpu's may fill the market for a while. One report I read was that a 1.8g atom was equal to a 1g celeron. As energy saving becomes more important, I would expect to see not only more atom based equipment, but arm cpu's also. If nothing else, it will push the mainstream cpu's and computers to be more efficient. It will also make people think to themselves how much is enough in a computer. As I look at distrowatch, I see more and more distros oriented towards older and or less horsepower equipment. There might be even a war between the atom and the arm as the amd and intel processors have been doing for so long. Debian runs fine on the arm based nslu2. Microsoft if it wants to stay completive may have to think about embedded computing a bit more. I know there are a few devices that run ce, but most of the manufacturers are using linux. As solid state drives become more prevalent with a smaller footprint, It will be interesting to see how technology goes. Dick Tracy speech controlled watch/computer with wifi here we go.
