From today's Slackware -current changelog:

Code: Select all

"Wed Aug 13 09:21:45 CDT 2008
l/poppler-0.8.5-i486-2.tgz: Added Qt4 support.
testing/packages/kde4: Added KDE version 4.1 to testing! :-)
Thanks to Robby Workman and Heinz Wiesinger for all the packaging and testing
help, and of course to the whole KDE community for helping to bring the Linux
desktop to a whole new level of appearance and ease of use. I've installed
this on my main email/browsing/general machine and as far as I'm concerned
there's just no looking back. It's really a big step forward."
Oh, and I forgot to mention: there is a new Slackware logo. Check out the news entry on slackware.com. :-)

It's not a font, it's a graphical art logo that spells out Slackware right side up and when read upside down. It's a little funky but I kinda like it.

Please tell me this is only temporary. I have to agree with Pat. I really don't like the logo. Of course, Slackware does not do a lot of branding in the installed distro, so I would imagine we will see this mostly at the main site. When a logo is mainly just text, I would opt for the clear readable version, and stay away from the artistic bends. Right now, to my eyes it just looks like a very difficult to read font. I didn't notice the whole upside down thing until you mentioned it Chess. Now that I know that, I still say I don't think I like it. Logos are first impression givers, I'm not sure this is a solid first impression.

However, art is art, and if it stays, I will still consider Slackware a great distro. It has been a while since I ran Slackware as my main distro. I believe I will have to give it another run when Pat V. stabilizes a version with KDE 4.1 as long as KDE 4.1 runs faster than Gnome 2.20. I like Gnome, but the desktops seems to be getting more resource hungry, kind of like Win98 to WinXP to WinVista.

Thanks for the Slackware news, Chess. Good to see your name pop up on the forum too. :-)

I'm with Pat on this one as well. The new logo kinda sucks. I don't want to see this logo on a splash screen anytime soon. When I think of Slackware, I think of an old, stable distro, not all artsy-fartsy. Either way I look forward to KDE4.1 in Slack.

Big thumbs down. Everyone I show this to thinks it says "Slackwars". Yuck.

Well, definitely send an email to Patrick Volkerding if you don't like the logo. He's very receptive to input and if enough people don't like it then he'll probably change it back.

I think a poll is in order. I'll mention it tonight on the show.

That is one awful unreadable artsy fartsy logo.
