Intel wins Venezuela laptop deal

No OLPC for them

Oil rich Venezuela will buy a million Classmate notebooks for school children, based on Intel's reference design.

According to the BBC, the $3 billion deal is part of a bilateral trade agreement with Portugal. The machines will be built in Portugal and use the Atom cut down microprocessor and will come with broadband connections and digicams.

But Microsoft will not get a look in at the dream deal - the machines will use the Linux operating system. Portugal itself has already signed a deal with Intel to create 500,000 "Magellan" machines for school children in its own country.

The deal will likely miff the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organisation, which would like every child in the world to use its design rather than one made by the aggressive semiconductor giant. X
