To help people start coding applications for the linux desktop, you might try this link.

You will find Bruce Perens book 'C++ GUI Programming with Qt 3'
It is in PDF format along with the source document files.
I hear it is the best book on KDE & C++.

Funny you mentioned that book. I ordered it before your posting. It's not actually written by Perens. It's part of the Peren's series. The guys that wrote it are KDE developers.
