Photoshop really needed for linux?

Most of the commercial artists and photographers I know that use Linux prefer the Gimp. I hear how touted Photoshop is better than The Gimp, but no one can give me any specific reason how or why. So linux has fine software already that challenge Photoshop in that realm, How is Photoshop for linux going increase a bigger market for linux except to line already fat pockets,

There are major missing features not in gimp .
GIMP and Photoshop differ in their color management features in ways that matter to some users. Photoshop has support for 16-bit, 32-bit, and floating point images,[42] support for the Pantone color matching system, or spot color and support for color models other than RGB(A) and greyscale, such as CMYK and CIE XYZ. GIMP, like other open source applications, does not support Pantone numbers for spot colors because of legal issues;[43] it has basic CMYK support.[44] Photoshop features extensive gamma correction support.
In addition, Photoshop contains several productivity features and tools not supported by GIMP, such as native support for Adjustment layers (layers which act like filters), layer styles and text blending options like drop shadow and glow,[45] undo history "snapshots" that persist between sessions, the history brush tool, folders in the layer window, a free transform tool to rotate, scale and move in one tool and multiple styles for text. GIMP also requires basic programming knowledge to build an automation upon it, usually Script-Fu (scheme) or Python-Fu, while Photoshop can record the user's actions and repeat them with a "Play" button. However, Photoshop's automation is not as powerful as GIMP's.[46]

Some of that will be fixed that 2.6 and later have the new gegl architecture

Not only Photoshop should be available for Linux, but also any other program available that runs on Windows. I am tired of hearing the FUD from the MSFT shills that Linux is not ready for prime time and that
people must run Windows..."or else". The next big thing after Photoshop, should be the income tax software and also banking sites that require IE/Windows. But the biggest hurdle that Linux faces is the gaming industry.

Your right games is a pretty big market share, of course making there games suit some of free software supporters is just not going happen too soon.
I think linux users would pay for the games. Its only a small proportion of the linux community who won't and just not touch it because its proprietary...

This has been discussed many times before, and better than I can do it. Even from my limited experience I don't think the Gimp compares to Photoshop. The interface is different and it lacks a lot of features. People are used to their workflow and not willing to learn an entirely new system.
The Gimp is a great program, but the people who use Photoshop want Photoshop. The Gimp would have to be significantly better than Photoshop for a significant market share to switch. If that happened, maybe Adobe would get scared enough to port Photoshop to Linux.
I've also heard plenty of people say Photoshop in Wine works just as well as Photoshop on Windows, so people have no reason to switch. I don't think cost is that much of a factor.

I don't think having Photoshop for Linux is that important. But I would install it, and play around with it, as soon as Adobe releases it as free software.

I don't understand. You're saying only version 7 of Photoshop will run in Wine?
