A popular question in desktop circles is "Can anyone make money from the Linux desktop?" Canonical CEO and Ubuntu founder, Mark Shuttleworth's answer is "I don't think anyone can make money from the Linux desktop."

This is one of the few times where I agree with Mark.

I think a better question would be "can you make money from selling proprietary software on a linux desktop" and the answer would be yes.
I know I am stating the obvious but that question is also just as obvious , its like can you make money by breathing .

Therefore Mark has stated nothing ground breaking , I guess the shutterworth fanboys wanted to hear mark say it

I agree that shrink wrap might be dead, but I think you can make money from the desktop if what you have to offer is unique enough. Larry Ellison of Oracle fame was always been in favor of a cloud environment should be happy now. I personally do not want my data on the web. After the data break-in of Hotjobs. I am even less likely to use that type of service. With more and more people getting laid off and homes foreclosed on, I suspect that isps will lose a fair amount of customers. Therefore the cloud environment will be less economically feasible. I predict that there will be an alternative internet where the big companies will not have control over. There is already talk of guerrilla standalone wifi based networks to circumvent the existing internet. It can be done.
