Google probably won't become bigger than Microsoft. Yes, they may become bigger in the way of market share in search (vs MSN) but do Google have 50 billion in the bank? ...maybe they will someday.
I think that Google are a big threat to M$ but an even bigger threat will be the company that actually comes up with a decent algorithm for search. Google search is better than MSN, but it doesn't return what I'm looking for right away. As impressive as returning 500,000 sites may be, I'm really only looking for 1 or 2. And why do I need to shuffle through the next 4-5 pages (sometimes more) just to find what I'm looking for. Search needs to advance in my opinion.
I am not happy with Google and their company in the way of search. They are not a very fast moving company. Apple as far as im concerned are a very fast moving company right now. In the last 2 years they have put out new versions of iTunes, the Mighty Mouse, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, OS X Tiger (Spotlight), the Mac mini, they're moving over to x86 architecture, Motorola iTunes phone, etc.
All of these may not be anything incredibly ground breaking but they are innovating. What have Microsoft put out in the last 2 years? or 5 years for that matter? We haven't even seen a new version of Windows. (Not that we need one).
Microsoft have become so big that they are indeed a lumbering giant.
Innovation isn't going to come from Microsoft or Google. They may have hired all the best minds in the industry, but more often than not innovation really comes from a no name startup.

Brockwoolf: I dissagree google I moving extremely fast now. look at Google Talk, Google Earth. GMail, and Google Wifi. All these came out somewhat recently. As far as getting search results I almost always get what I want within the first or second page with the advanced search tips, personalized google, and specific google seaches (i.e. Google Linux search). I believe google is better than Microsoft in terms of openness and always will be. They have gotten as far as they are now by being so open and it would be stupid if they through away their roots just so they can screw a bunch of users so they can make a pretty penny till everyone leaves it.

Google are making a few services that are already available in different forms. They are doing things. Google Earth is great! Too bad it only runs on Windows
The main point about search is this:
Google is obviously the best in terms of search. Especially if you compare them to MSN. MSN sucks.
I just hate doing a google search and the first result is usually not what I'm after. It's just about always (for me) the 4th - 10th result. That sucks.
There is such a big bulk of content out there now that we really do need some search tool that is far superior to what we have now. Same for desktop search. Spotlight for OS X is really nice, it's the best search on any OS. But it's not as good as I would like it to be. The Google search tool (Windows) was a real novelty when I first used it. I never used it for more that 1 day. After that I found it pretty useless.
Google might be the one that does get there. And as nice as Google Earth is, it's still a bit of a novelty...kinda like Dashboard....

I heard that google would make its own OS although I am almost positive they would not do this from scratch (if at all) they would probly make a Linux Distro although you will probly see all of their apps ported to linux before you even hear google talk about an OS.no1important wrote:I heard rumours awhile back that Google was going to create its own Linux distro. Anyone else hear anything if this is true or not?
Note: I think they are going to port GTalk first because it says they are planning to bring it to other operating systems soon.
