24 hour stream

Post by matt » Fri May 14, 2004 4:02 am

What do you TLLTS guys think about joining forces to create a 24 hour stream, that'd be of interest to F/OSS and Linux fans? So, there'd be our shows, plus we can see how SlugRadio pans out. I'm sure there'll be others too.

My main concern is lack of content and bandwidth bills :)

Do you think that, when we have more content, this could be a viable project?

I have been thinking about this for a long time. Dann and I have discussed it several times now. I think there are only a couple problems with it. 1 would be content, but we are rapidly approaching the time when that would not be an issue since we have now 3 shows which could be broadcast. The other issue is the bamdwidth problem. Now Dann is going to have some increase in his bandwidth very very soon and he does the stream hosting, however, it's still limited :-) I have seen in several places like icecast.org a list of streams you can connect to and I keep wondering if they actually provide a relay stream or just a link to the original. If we can find some people willing to host a relay stream, we'd be set in that reguard. I just haven't had the time to do any research in that area yet unfortunately. If you want something to help out with to get this going, that would be the thing....

As far as *starting* this kind of thing, I would bet that I could already convince Dann to add the other 2 shows into the current stream we have going now.... :-)

Dann???

I would have absolutely no problem hosting streams. But I do echo Linc in that it would be a good idea to find some mirror sites too.

Hopefully by the end of the week I will have that added bandwidth we have been promising for mid-may.

I'll thorw one of my PCs in for this idea, but I'm going to need some help setting it up. Not only am I a Linux n00bie, but networking one too.

Let me know if this will work for you:
DSL connection off of a 4 port router using a e-machine with 2 gigs hhd (also have another 2 gig hhd with an old version of Red Hat on it) and a 300 MHz Cyrix running 24/7.
The e-machine isn't running 24/7 now. It's still on the floor where I put it 4 months ago, but I know it does work.

If the CPU is too slow, I could do a low budget upgrade to it.
Comp parts shopping...did someone say "upgrade?" hehe

I'd say we'd need to have one or two primary sites, that are hosted in pro hosting centres.

Anyway, we can look into it again when we have more content!

BAH I say! :-)
The way I figure it, we should have plenty to start with already! There's no reason we couldn't push older shows during the day as well as recent ones.. There are also sources of music to share as well - some we have used on the Tech Show, some from new people who have offered and I think I saw some on Jono's website (was it?). I say we make it happen.
Is there anyone there in the UK you could look to to host a relay stream?
Do you have any contact with the slugradio fella's to get us permission to play their shows as well?
LET'S DO IT! :-)

Cool. I'm planning to start producing an hour, or so, of non-LugRadio material each month. It won't necessarily be about Linux, in fact it definitely won't be about Linux, but it'll be of general interest.

So long as there are no licensing issues, music's cool.

I'm certainly up for it but just have some bandwith concerns. Perhaps if we did it nice and quietly, so not too many people find out :)

I can think of one or two people who'd be interested.

Neuor of SlugRadio is registered on these very forums :)

Cool, let's go for it. But we need to decide:

* what to call it
* what quality audio we offer
* who decides the scheduling and what we play.

I say we thrash out the last one between us. As for a name, I'll have a tihnk.

Shouldn't be a problem. There are a few people I am in touch with now who are interested in providing musical content.

I have some friends with bandwidth who are considering hosting this, and I just looked at the fees at live365.com which say they'd do it with a 50 simultaneous users for $26 a month or 100 simultaneous users for $38 a month.

Great! The more the merrier!

Dann already has a lot of this started. See the new page at http://thelinuxlink.net. I'll let him chime in on this too....

I thought about this myself. Individuals could record some commentary or othr audio and we could add it right into the stream. If we get enough, we could make 30 minute or hour long segments for download in the archives.

Well I just tripled my bandwidth and already host the Tech Show Stream, so I say bring it on! Of course, some mirrors would be good too.

Is Neuor on this list of the LUGRadio list?

I set up The Linux Link for such a purpose. So long to the print magazine lo many years ago proposed.

What audio quality are other shows streaming at?

As for scheduling, the only thing I could see interrupting a schedule if I hosted it would be the weekly techshow. Figure an hour to an hour-and-a-half interruption, but that is about it. Would this be something that we would want to have run at certain times? For instance, on a Monday at 8:00 a.m. it would be LUGRadio and then at 10:00 a.m. it would be the Tech Show followed by SLUGRadio at 11:30 with music and commentary to fill up the time inbetween shows. Have this on some sort of rotating schedule so that on Tuesday the times would be different, maybe bumped up an hour?

Doing this would take some planning to fill out the times.

Hey everyone, it's running now. Take a listen to http://thelinuxlink.net:8000
I just heard the very first transition of the Tech Show into the LugRadio show. It was a beautiful and momentous thing to behold :-)

Hopefully we will have more to add on tomorrow night, like some music, SLUGRadio, and some other stuff. I am dld'ing the latest dynebolic now. Perhaps that will take care of some lingering issues with ogg and mp3 streaming.

Yes, the stream is running 24/7 at thelinuxlink.net:8000 for your
listening pleasure. Current content includes the Tech Show, Lug Radio,
SLug Radio, some user contributed content and music.
If you have ideas for content or already have some you'd like to add to
the playlist, please contact us right away! You can get you stuff on the
stream by contacting us at techshow -a-t- thelinuxlink -d-o-t- net
I think this type of project will turn out to be very popular and a very
important venue for us all, so remember, it'll only be as good as we all
try and make it!

Well, I'm going to be interviewing someone who was behind the UK's only worthwhile flash mob, shortly. They turned up and donated loads of clothes to a charity.

I'm listening to the stream as I type :-) Dann, how much involvement from the likes of me, are you interested in?

Are you planning to run an Ogg stream too? Cool. Oggs rule!

How are you encoding the stream? I'm getting some sound quality drop outs which I wouldn't expect at 24 Kbps 22 Khz.

This stream is very cool. I think, if we get enough bandwidth, it could become quite massively popular. Particularly if we keep producing good content.

Man, this is cool. Nice one lads.
