At a recent Raymond James IT Supply Chain Conference, Stu Pann, vice president in the sales and marketing group at Intel, said his company sees the Netbook differently now.

"We originally thought Netbooks would be for emerging markets and younger kids, and there is some of that. It turns out the bulk of the Netbooks sold today are Western Europe, North America, and for people who just want to grab and go with a notebook," Pann said. "We view the Netbook as mostly incremental to our total available market," he added.

And the most revealing statement? "If you've ever used a Netbook and used a 10-inch screen size--it's fine for an hour. It's not something you're going to use day in and day out."

Intel must be in a panic now that people are starting to figure out that they can have cheap small portable computers that are actually just powerful enough to do what they need to do most of the time. Why else would Intel be talking down the platform for its fastest growing Atom processor?

With the economic times and a cheaper alternatives such as netbooks, this might hit their bottom line as they sell more of the cheaper chips at the expense of their more expensive offerings, thus undercutting their own business. As PC sales slow with people holding off purchases or just not having the disposable income, things will get interesting. Of course, they'd be in better shape if they didn't lower prices so much trying to kill off AMD.

For a lot of people they probably only need a netbook. Other than a little browsing and e-mail, they're not doing much else to justify a laptop or larger computer.

Rumor has it that windows 7 will easily run on older hw including p1's. Though I will believe it when I see it. I am grabbing all the older free intel boxes I can. They might actually have a real resale value soon if not as a whole, then the used parts market might be ripe for some pickings.
