My wife clued me into the Japenese finding and video taping a giant squid this evening, but sent me a link to msnbc's site which would not work under Linux. I managed to find the video over on CNN's website which will run under mplayer:

I listen to the IT Conversations podcasts, and recently on Tech Nation there have been several on deep sea exploration. On one, someone said Giant Squid aren't really that rare. They're just very sensitive to light, so when we go down in a noisy sub with spot lights all over it, it scares them away.
They're working on a bathysphere with lasers for navigation but with very little light output or with night vision capability so we can videotape more of this stuff.
