Why are .exe and .net files on suse 11 dvd? Does not Novel know how insulting that is to a linux user, The dvd went straight into the trash can....

Those are probably mono-application files. Mono, a FOSS implementation of .net usually appends a .exe or .net extension to the binary files. Oh the glory!

Well, my first Linux experience was openSUSE 10.1. I ran it to 10.2 before learning enough and feeling comfortable to move on. And openSUSE was good enough for me to use full time as my desktop back then over XP. So show them some love for being a decent introduction distro. I'm sure the newer version is better.

Now I'm running Slackware on my desktop, Fedora on the laptop. And I just did my first Slackware upgrade from 12.1 to 12.2. I manually updated my .new files and even had to fix the kernel symbolic link for rc.modules which was neglected in Patrick's upgrade text file. I feel so special, . This Slackware is just so darn fast and stable it is worth the extra work.

I started with Suse long before Novell owned them and loved everyone till 9.x. When I was a Novell NOS container manager on 4.11, I was really into NOS. So I signed up as a registered developer. I eventually became to own Novell NOS versions 3-6, but do no use it anymore because of linux. I even owned all of the Wordperfect series 5.x which I earned for free as a small computer store salesman. Suse linux has been ruined because of that (expletive deleted) Hovsepian. Novell's Microsoft brown nosers do not deserve our love anymore. Been there done that.

Novell seems to have firmly attached itself to Microshaft's breasts. Apparently you were not around when the Emballmer allegedly blatantly accused the linux community of IP theft. Ever noticed how Billy Gates seems to look a lot like "Eddie Haskell".

I do question what Novell has done with Microsoft through their deal and the direction of some of their software efforts, and part of why I don't run it today. But when I started using openSUSE, I knew next to nothing of free software and Linux. I was steered into trying it by a former IT guy who still runs Windows for his full time OS and thinks free software is "crap" compared to expensive commercial software (some fools are easily parted from their money). So still, openSUSE is a decent OS that can still help new people try Linux and have a relatively easy time of it. Once they give it a try and learn about the whole free software world and Linux, then they can pick another distro that better suites their tastes and beliefs. So even with the questionable corporate moves of Novell, openSUSE is still helping to bring in new Linux users. Everyone that is liberated from proprietary operating systems is a good thing.

Suse used to have a ton of software that came with it. As Novell and Microsoft became involved that deluge dwindled dramatically. It seems that packages where there was true freedom, were removed or replaced with .net aka mono based applets. Also the stability of suse probably declined at 30 to 50 percent. It looks like microsoft windows and staying with that only makes it harder for people to get into real linux. I have had no problem getting people into linux with using a bit of suse. My brother is a msfanboy, but at least he has the sense to teach unbuntu where he works as a college professsor of computer science. People who use suse linux are lulling themselves to sleep that it is the best out there and that it is the only way to get people to convert to linux. Novell and Microsoft are slowing turning suse into another windows product and sucking the real linux out of it. It is a shame most developers can not see that. I wrote a ton of code for various flavors of ms "basic" before I was into linux. At first I could not wait for mono to come out, then I saw the pattern to erode the linux world. I have not used it since. I am beginning to feel like Linus Torvalds did and want to develop my own os. I do not plan to devote that kind of time at this point. I predict viruses and tremendous security issues in linux before you know it because of .net based code. Guess who will say that linux is not secure.....
