I recall something said a few months back that MS had made windows 2000 freely available. If so, where can one get that?

If they had done that I'm sure it would have been frontpage news everywhere, and I have not heard anything remotely like this. And believe me I would, because to this day, I still believe that Windows 2000 is the best operating system that Microsoft has ever made (That's not saying it's the best OS in general, it's certainly not, I believe GNU/Linux and the BSDs share that position). So Dann, I think you must have had some weird-ass dream or something.

I bought all original win2kas on ebay for like 25 bucks sometime back. Just need to install citrix (also 25 dollars) to play with.
Why would anyone (except me) want win2k? You can download a time limited version of win2k8s from MS, but the you can get w7 as a free dl also. w7 was pretty easy to dl today.

Dann you had a dream that is a premonition of the future. In as early as 5 years and no later than 10, Microsoft will make Windows free software, and I mean free as in freedom. Yes, I'm serious.

I bet also with back doors for any agency to get into free.

I think he means to say that you and I are "fair weather" GNU/Linux users, because we might consider switching from GNU/Linux to Windows if it were free software. To which I say that I have no problem with considering using any software that gave me my 4 freedoms. There are other considerations I'll take into account as well. Oh, windows is aweful and virus laden. I don't think anyone who uses Linux, and I mean actually uses, not dual boot or has installed on a system from 1998, would ever switch.

As a user of both GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD; I second that 100% !

It is agreed that you should look at the application software first and the os software second when deciding what to use. So much of the similar software is available for all major platforms that looking at the os is more of an important issue. Not being an addicted game player, commercial games are not an issue. Writing code to solve a real world problem is more of a game to me than than eye hand coordination game shoot-em-ups. Logic games are much more fun. We would prefer to play neighborhood basketball or football rather than seeing how many sprites one can destroy. On a rare occasion one might play something like doom. Even if mswindows went to the gpl, most people will never feel it is free till the security leaks are fixed, not needing a product key, drm removed, and all the memory management issues are resolved. The new mswindows software will not run on most of my legacy equipment anyway. Mswindows being part of the gpl means nothing to me. Having grown up computer wise in a Microsoft world, one is tempted to slip back into the old mold. Using mswindows products in slow motion for five or ten minutes, you then come back to your senses. We have one Dell GX110 with xp that is used about once a year at tax time. That is enough. Having at one time been enrolled to practice before the IRS as a degreed accountant, I should get off my rear and develop an income tax program and with a complete home/business accounting package. If someone wants to donate $100,000, I will then do it. The donation will would have to be a miracle, so do not expect anything.
