HP Mini Mi, command line disabled, What??

What's wrong with HP?
I contacted HP to ask why it had disabled the Linux command line interface. HP offered the following statement from Jonathan Kaye, the Director of Consumer Notebooks at HP:
The HP Mini 1000 with Mi is designed for the consumer who wants to do the main activities with their computer such as email, browsing the Internet, and chatting without worrying about operating systems or what is inside. HP is focused on the user experience and developed the HP Mini 1000 with Mi for the mass consumer market that wants a complete mobile Internet experience and not just a Linux computer. As this is HP’s first product with a custom user interface built on Linux, HP is very open to customer feedback that could help improve the experience.

That would suck for me. But that would be great for my mom and girlfriend. They don't know what the command line is. Well, my mom does.

What harm is it to just leave the commandline there for anybody who wants it? Shit even windows has access to a DOS prompt.

I am sure that HP will make a correction about using the command line. I am thinking about getting an hp mini one note.

Well, I did read that HP was going to revisit the issue in a future revision of the OS depending on the requests, but I do think it's silly of them to bypass the access to the command line like that.
Ah well, someone will figure it out. I imagine it's just a matter of installing a shell.

I am no big fan of the command line. But the command line is much faster and sometimes the only way to achieve what you want like the commands for installing mad wifi/atheros 5007 which installs the wifi on Atheros wireless equipped laptops.
Even so, most instructions for adding something for a distro is simple as cutting and pasting the command into the terminal. Mostly everyone knows how to cut and paste.

I love the command line for doing remote administration. I love even doing little things on my workstation. One thing about command line you can set up batch files for cron or at so that you do not have to mouse click on every little thing for repetitive tasks. It is so much faster. I am sure there will be a gui shell whether hp does it or not.
HP Mini Mi, command line -IS- available

The "terminal" application -IS- readily available on my HP Mini11020NR MI Edition netbook.
After I unpacked it and ran the software update process, I clicked on "settings", then the "advanced" tab. The option was presented to add "root terminal" to the list of displayed applications. Simple.
