So basically, according to AMD, there is no such new thing as a netbook. Don't try and tell them otherwise... nah, nah, nah, nah, nah... they can't hear you...

I used to be a big AMD fan, but their incompetence is stunning. They might as well just go out of business now.

Actually greggh, the Geode is not something you'd use in a netbook, it's a processor you use in embedded devices. For example, my Soekris box (Which I use as a router with pfSense) uses a Geode CPU. OLPC is probably the only exception.

You wouldn't use a 15 watt Neo either. That's exactly the point.

Valid point. However I don't really blame AMD for wanting to focus on getting their Opteron chips in better shape, sure maybe they should diversify a bit, but still, I am not as down on them as you are. If they don't think there's any business for them in netbooks, I don't really care as long as they produce good desktop, workstation and server chips.

All in all, I would also disagree with how AMD makes choices of chip design. Though I have never understood some of the ways that AMD does things anyway. As for the terminology, technically, a net top is a just laptop with limited resources. You still have to put your pants on the same way so to speak when using a so called nettop no matter what the internal chip design is. I have seen people take 6502/6510 based C=64s and Atari's and converted them into laptops. They have a different type cpu, and should maybe have special names too for them. Then again remember the old Commodore Excutive64, Kaypro, Osborne, Amstrad, and etc lug-gables. I am old fashioned, but I still think of any portable computer except the lug-gables as a laptop. The all had different cpus but were still in the same classification. As a reference. when was the last time you heard anyone say mini-computer verses saying micro-computer. The same type of argument was made back when. The laptop is the new mini-computer or lug-gable and the nettop is the new micro-computer or laptop if you can see the comparison. They all have a cpu that can calculate, can do input/output, have internal storage or memory, and usually have external storage of some kind. A ps3 would have been a super computer not so long ago. Now if you put quite a few of them together in a cluster, they are almost are. But then, you can also cluster almost any set of computers. There have been so many chip designs over the years (you could probably list at least 100), the name is all relative to me. They are all a just computers. For a real comparison, remember the old Atari portfolio with x86 based lookalike features? The first real mini-nettop. Way ahead of it's time.

The important thing about netbooks is that technology is just now getting into sync with smaller being cheaper. Instead of paying a premium for what we used to call "ultra-portables" we now pay less for them. Less screen is actually cheaper than more screen for the manufacturer, and the added cost in design and manufacturing for shrinking the entire device is more and more quickly becoming cheaper and cheaper.

Yes, a netbook is just a low cost notebook. But, with smaller now being able to be produced for much less, people are realizing that the benefits of having a notebook/netbook that's more portable with much longer battery life is more valuable to them than having a powerful processor. All of the market growth is going to come from portables like notebooks, netbooks, and whatever these morph into... UMPCs, MIDs. That AMD is in denial about this, is amazing.
