USB on the TV

Someone was asking why TVs have USB ports on last week's show.
My Samsung LCD says in the manual tha when software updates are available you can download them to a USB key, plug it in and flash the software.
It doesn't say anthing about using it for pictures, but that's possible. Usually you can burn .jpegs to a CD and put it in a DVD player for a slideshow, so building it into a TV seems silly.

My Panasonic Plasma TV is a couple years old. It has an SD card slot.
It can be used for firmware upgrades (the Panasonic actually runs Linux , one of the screens in it mentions the GPL and where to download the source code).
The SD slot can also be used for pictures.
The big benefit in using the SD card slot for pictures over a DVD slideshow is you get full use of the TV's resolution for the picture, and with a DVD slide show you have to live with the standard DVD resolution (720 x 480 I think).

I think that this would be a GREAT idea! I was just discussing this with someone last night. It would be great if you didn't want to have to burn a stupid DVD to watch a movie and you could just plug your pen drive in and watch your DVDs. I have some pirated DVDs on my laptop. But they're not encrypted because they are not American films. Well, one is but it's from a film festival and now it's making tons of money in the box office but I've had the full quality dvd for a while. Piracy is great.

Well the cheapest and easiest way to do the USB on the TV that I have seen is some of the newer DVD players with USB ports.
Last Christmas I bought some of the Philips DVP-5992 DVD players for various rooms in the house.
It is an up-converting DVD player (so it has HDMI and component) that can up-scale your DVD's to 1080i/p if you wish.
The USB support is awesome. It will play divx, mpeg1&2, and even WMV files off of a USB stick, USB drive, or burnt as files to a DVD or CD. The thing plays everything I have thrown at it. Very convenient to be able to just throw some movies or shows onto a 16GB memory stick and be able to play them immediately.
It is pretty cheap too. $50 or so at Costco. Highly recommended.
