Re: IBM about to buy Sun?
Is this bad news?
Re: IBM about to buy Sun?
If IBM did buy Sun, Sun would no longer be a puppet of MS. I would also bet that IBM would love to get a hold of some of the documents about the Sun dealings with MS also. I bet IBM would love to have some of the licenses that would make a lot of lawsuits go away. It is getting curiouser and curiouser........

So, I know that Sun has Java, Virtual Box and Open Office. But what does IBM have?

Do you think that they will stop supporting VBOSE? I use that at home to watch Netflix.

Sun is a puppet of M$ ?!?! Have you not heard of Sun suing M$ over Java/Visual J++:eddie wrote:If IBM did buy Sun, Sun would no longer be a puppet of MS.

Sun also has MySQL. They spent $1 Bil to get it.MattKingUSA wrote:So, I know that Sun has Java, Virtual Box and Open Office. But what does IBM have?
From Pat's last link...
Another feather in IBM's hat will be that it will get MySQL, the enormously popular database manager. When Sun bought MySQL, I thought it was the best move the company had ever made. I was wrong.
Sun mishandled its new acquisition. MySQL's top programmers left. MySQL's founder and still Sun CTO for its MySQL division, Michael 'Monty' Widenius said publicly that the GA (general availability) version of MySQL 5.1 was filled with bugs.
With the right management, say IBM's DB2 division, though, MySQL should still be a star. MySQL is the DBMS (database management system) of Web 2.0 businesses such as Twitter, Facebook, and WordPress.
Re: IBM about to buy Sun?
I know about the java thing, but they made up over that when ms infused a bit of money into sun.Sun suing M$ over Java/Visual J++:
I have noticed that at least some web apps are now wanting psql instead of mysql. So I have to run both on my internal web server. Although sql itsel has not changed, mysql interface commands under php have changed a bit. It rendered a lot of my code useless. I have since rectified that though.
There are a quite a few institutions using solaris such as a lot of colleges that still use sun solaris to run sct/banner. That would be a major coup for adding customers.
Dave Yates spark and and other sun hardware could be come real collectors items.
Re: IBM about to buy Sun?
Sounds like buyout talks are moving forward:

Pat you ought to get him on the show some time, just for a nice good rant about everything going on in FOSS these days!Patrick wrote:Some interesting predictions from SJVN:

(And I mean that in the nicest way, not like in a bad way!)

Re: IBM about to buy Sun?
It looks like Sun will be fetching a price of about $7 Bil if it goes through at $9-10/share.
Re: IBM about to buy Sun?
Even though Ibm lowered it's offer for sun by fifty cents a share, If ibm is going to do this now maybe ibm thinks the market is heading for a rise and wants to get sun while it can.
