Just listening to the latest TLLTS... I have some tip regarding not seeing available Ubuntu updates. You might use Conky and a script to show you the available updates via APT. Here's what I do:

Just put that script in your PATH and your .conkyrc and execute aptitude update regularly via cron. Hope that helps some people. :)

I'm REALLY sorry to bring up such an old thread but I'm WAY behind on the episodes

The show where this is mentioned is #295. Everyone was saying that they didn't like this new Ubuntu notification thingy.

I don't use Ubuntu but if I understand correctly, the issue is the system updates and only displays what updated at the time and so if you aren't looking you could miss that info. The thing is, as far as I know, Ubuntu is made for new "users" and as such I would say that this operation is perfect for them. They don't want to know, don't care, and would probably be confused by this enough as it is.

Couldn't you just tail your update log or something if you wanted to know or just run a distro more suited to the technical and/or people interested in what's going on under the hood?

I guess I just don't understand why you all left Slackware in the first place :P
