Pat, I read on you blog that you're trying different GUI FTP apps.

Have you tried using Konqueror for this sort of thing? I find it to be a great FTP client. I like being able to save different profiles for each of the websites I maintain.

Just open up a profile, and Konqueror opens the proper local folders and remote folders automatically. Then I just drag and drop.

You know I should of thought of that first since I'm a KDE user. I'll have to try it out. Does it save session information?

Yes. Spilt your window views and open up the folders you wish to view as a session, then save the session.

Dave, you're the man! Konqueror is fantastic. The kde-bluetooth framework
integrates nicely with Konqueror as well.

KDE - the Vista killer!

GNOME has something similar built in as well. I have a folder on my desktop with an FTP connection to my web server. I have another that's an SSH connection to my home server. So I can finish editing a web page on one machine and drag and drop the files to another machine. Completely seamless.

Yes, Konqueror uses "fish://" to accoplish the same task.

Besides FTP & SSH, Konqueror also lets you browse samba shares on the network:

Does Nautilis do all this? I ask because I have not used Gnome as my desktop in many years. Does fluxbox, enlightenment and xfce have anything similiar? I'm sure you can run Konqueror as your file manager in those environments with the required kdelibs and packages.

Yes, Nautilus can browse Samba (and most other things). Also apparently Nautilus has an easily hackable interface so people are writing Python plugins to do pretty much anything. In Fedora Extras I see plugins to mass resize pictures, add search to the right-click menu in folders, and add a "sendto" item to context menus.

Nautilus has plenty of problems, but it's got a lot of features, too.

I used gftp on gnome but also on ncftp on the command line. I find the command line much simpler to do since it has bookmarks on commandline and is instant on upload. I guess mc is better but if you just want to do a quick upload ncftp is fast fast fast!!!

Couldn't agree more, nor could I have said it better myself!

I've been using Konqueror as my ftp/ssh client and it works very well. I'm happy.
