domain name registration for home web server

Post by andylinux » Fri Sep 18, 2009 7:01 pm

I currently have a shared hosting web plan but want to move it to a home web server. I'm looking for some help on how to make my current domain name go to my new home web sever. A couple things to note. I have my domain name registered with 1 & 1. I have a dynamic ip address but access my systems via ssh using dyndns by having my dd-wrt a router update openDNS's dnsomatic which then updates my dyndns ip address.

Is anyone using a home webserver with dynamic dns and have their own domain name rather then

Would I better going with a different company to register my domain? If so any suggestions? I'm paying $7 a year and wouldn't mind paying a little more if the setup was easy.

I tried using 1 & 1s option to forward my current domain to my dyndns website. It doesn't seem to work but I haven't tried their tech support yet. Even if it worked, when it is forwarded my understanding is it would just forward to my dynds website name rather then keep my registered domain name (if that makes sense).

Thanks for the help, enjoy the tech show.

We use ddns with dyndns.org with both our isps. So far it's been working fine.. You just need a router that supports ddns.

Thanks fro the suggestion. After some researching, I realized that I needed to edit my dns settings at the place I have my domain registered. I changed the dns settings with my domain registrar to point to one of the companies that provides free dns with dnsomatic. This way when my ip address changes dnsomatic informs the place I'm using for my dns settings. I'm trying this company right now www.sitelutions.com but there were others. I also thought about transferring my domain to namecheap.com as they also support dsnomatic but I didn't feel like messing with that right now.

Thanks for the help.
