There are probably better recipe managers, but the gourmet recipe manager might be a good one to start with. It is in the repo for Ubuntu. I am not a chef much less a cook, but we wanted to start putting together a recipe book of what we like to make most and what has been handed down to us for the kids and future grand kids. I could easily write a database to do that, but why reinvent the wheel. I have a ton of recipes in text files. that I have collected. With a little tweaking, text (aka ascii files) files can be easily imported into the gourmet recipe manager. Not only that, the gourmet recipe manager will scrape a web page to import an existing recipe off the web into the database. Cool. Suffice it to say the database is filling up pretty quick. I have been instructed that a computer with internet access now needs to be in the kitchen. I will probably put an ltsp thin client that can be attached under the cabinet for space saving and safety reasons with an inexpensive lcd that can be mounted on the kitchen wall. Might do it later and let it be a surprise for the holidays. If I can only stall that long. There is already a computer everywhere else it seems like. Anyway another feature I like is that if you click on a time in the recipe, it will bring up a timer for you to use. So I guess you could have several timers going on at the same time for all the dishes you are working on. enough for now. Time to get cooking.
