;i recently got a tremendous deal on an ipod photo from a friend that i could not pass up, and after a weekend of playing with a seperate windows partition on my laptop soley for use with itunes, i've decided that i have no desire to go back to windows at all, for any reason. i love itunes--i think the interface is an example of some of the best software design i've ever seen--but i have no desire to use windows. i do not have os x either, which rules out using a mac.

;this, of course, leads to the topic of this thread: has anyone had personal experience in setting up and using an ipod *soley* through a linux distribution? obviously, i can read technical articles, but i'm look for your personal experiences.

I actually drag and drop stuff from the directory bashpodder puts it in to my USB thumb drive, which automatically mounts itself when I plug it in. So technically I use Nautilus. Then I take the drive with me, plug it into the computer at work, and put on my headphones.

I use my ipod soley with linux and prefer gnupod.

Works well with crux, gentoo, debian on my powerbook or an older imac. gtkpod is fine for a graphical look if you like.

I have an Iaudio5 player. Mounts like a thumdrive. Drag & drop files.

;this was actually the player that i was going to buy before my friend offered hers to me. i like the ogg support, the mount-as-drive ease of integration, and the fact that it uses standard batteries--not to mention that i has a radio and it can do voice recording.

There's 2 scroll wheels. 1 on top, 1 on the bottom. Took a little while to get use but I don't even think about it anymore. I like it a lot and recommend it to others. My sister had an Ipod mini. Nice design but it died after 9 months. Plus Apple DRM crap sucks! No thanks

;very true. the ipod battery problem is enough to make me not buy one. i couldn't pass up the deal though, because she'd bought it retail and got a lifetime drop-kick warranty from the store, which she's passed on to me.

;i think anyone who purchases songs from itunes music store might as well take their money, walk to the nearest toilet, drop it in, and flush. total waste. if i want music from well-known record labels (read: RIAA), then i'll buy the disc. and for purchases online, i think the magnatune model is brilliant.

When I wanna put new stuff on my iPod, I just hijack my sister's Windows laptop because gtkpod always screws up my iPod mini.
