I found my answer to the gnome 3 / unity dilemma. Neither one met my needs. I also tried KDE and XFCE for a short bit. But as a long time gnome 2 user with Ubuntu / Mint none of those worked.

I hit distrowatch several times looking for the answer. I tried Arch, Kubuntu, Mint 12, etc. But none of those really match what gnome 2 was.

Then I found a debian net install disk from May 2011 that I had lying on my desk. I loaded that up and am now on Debian Squeeze which still supports
gnome 2. It is a little more work to get stuff set up than say Ubuntu or Mint but that's no problem. And instead of firefox and thunderbird it has iceweasel /icedove but that is all the same I guess.

Anyway, I am feeling much more at home and Squeeze will probably be supported for some time. And it is stable of course.

You might want to try Linux Mint Debian Edition.

Just installed f16 as a stock install, after wiping u10.04. Saw the g3 and it is a pain to navigate. Installed lxde (which you can also do to most any distro) and then made it the default. Still have some tweaking to do, but it works great with the server including mt-daapd. It also works great with the arduino.

If you prefer a more conventional desktop and neither Xfce, LXDE, or KDE meet your needs, check out MATE Desktop Environment or Cinnamon.

MATE and Cinnamon are both excellent. I am running MATE on Linux Mint 13 and loving it. I installed it from the repos instead of using the customized Mint version.

I am still running Debian Squeeze without problem. I had to manually update iceweasel but that was no big deal.

After installing 12.04 on my Macbook Air, I decided I would try Unity again for a period of 48 hours just to see if it has improved from the last time I tried it (11.04 I think). To my surprise, I am actually liking it. It looks nice and is responsive. I think I'll keep trying it out longer. I may not even worry about installing MATE on this install.
