Some of the comments are pretty negative. Yes, we've had some volume issues but who have we ever bashed? We try support all the other linux podcasts out there. The funniest comment was that "they're most scripted linux podcast". How wrong is that!

You know the more I think about the negative comments, the more I think that person/people haven't really listened to use and get us confused with LugRadio or something.. ??

Thinking about it, I think it's sort of a weird compliment. I guess we're the masters of linux improv.

Dugg. I've got to say, the live format, and unpolishedness of TLLTS is what makes it so great in my opinion. It gives it it's charm, and makes it different from every other podcast out there. I guess some of these people on digg just can't appreciate that.

The audio quality has always bugged me. While I should have spent more time on this in the past, I'll be testing out some methods over the next few days in hopes to improve the quality of future shows.

The mp3 is encoded off the dynebolic and put up for download right away. The ogg and extended mp3 are encoded form the wav after the "extra bits" are added on. Since doing this I have not listened to the regular mp3 in a while. I have noticed, though, that while the wav sound pretty good, there is a drop in volume when the file is encoded in mp3 or ogg format. This drop is even more perceptable when I play it through the iRiver. I have to have the volume all the way up on the iRiver and crank speakers if I can. That's no good.

Glad you noticed this Dann. I know the last two weeks you have been working on the volume, but it has been lower than ever. You can tell when you look at it in Audacity. I think you are using a Behringer Composer Pro. I have the same model, and you have to watch the limiter knob. I need to have it just barely on which is almost totally turned over to the right. When it is on just barely it limits the sound to -1 db without having clips, but just a little more on the limit knob (more to the left) I get levels limited to around -6. That is a huge differance.

Maybe check that out?

I know you use Asterisk a lot also. The latest version 1.2 added a feature so people can raise/lower there volumes in a conference. That could be helpful if more than 1 person is on the Asterisk.

Is the volume of the regular mp3 really low too? I haven't experimented with that one yet.

I did some sample files working with scaling in lame and vorbisgain along with normalization. If I play the files back on my system through xmms, I don't have a volume problem but I do notice a volume difference between the regular encoding and the scaled encodings.

I notice the probem on my iRiver. I normalized the wav then used lame to encode the mp3's one with a scale of 3 and another at 5. I felt 3 could be a bit louder, but was a marked difference from the normal way I encode. 5 really boosted the volume but Linc on the asterisk sounded muffled.

Perhaps later I will post the test files and have other people try them out, see what they think.

I'm not sure which mp3 I'm getting. I'm refering to the one that bashpodder grabs Thursday morning. That is the one I feel is too low.

Maybe by "most scripted" they're talking about bashpodder.
It's the script I use the most!
