Alright all,

Another brain teaser for you, although I'm sure that you will know this without too much effort.

The communal pc in our shared house is now running slack 10.2 and everything is great, the win2k box could be heading for retirement but there are 2 minor obstacles that I need to sort out first...

1. The default player for .pls (streaming mp3 from shoutcast etc) files at the moment is xine, which is ok but when you click on a stream the web browser window becomes the xine window which is not great. I have downloaded and setup xmms, and I'd like to make it the default player for .pls or anything musical really as it seems a more pleasant application.

2. My housemate used to use a tool called 'bitlord' on the win2k box for downloading football matches (honestly!) - is there a comparable application for linux that you could recommend?

You're talking about a bittorrent client right? Personally I like azureus:

It's coded in java and thus cross platform.

If you're using KDE 3.4 as your desktop environment you can right-mouse click on the stream, choose Open With, select XMMS and check the box that makes the selection the new default.

Thanks for the advice - it's all looking good now.

Only 1 thing still outstanding - making xmms default, in firefox there's no 'open with option' with the right click. There is this option with konqueror, but I can't find a check box to set it as default.

It's not a major thing, but if anyone knows how I should be doing this it'd be awesome.

I've made a few now for the office, as many people, even though they use PC every day, don't know how to do some of the simpler things... like book an appointment in their e-mail calendar.

The visual tutorials seem to be popular.

A little program called "Wink" http://www.debugmode.com/wink/

It's freeware and has versions for both Linux and MS-Windows users.

OK - I think I am getting the hang of this now, but may have found a bit of a bug...

I've made the file association changes, and if I click on a stream using konqueror as my browser, then xmms fires up and everything is good. However, if I do the same using firefox then gxine fires up - even though I have removed gxine from being associated in KDE control centre. Anyone else seen this problem?

In Firefox, check the settings in your Edit -> Preferences -> Downloads -> File Types / Plug-ins...

I don't use Firefox on my Linux box too much, so I can't be much help here.
